AIBU to share my breakthrough with conditioner bars

I’ve been trying to de plasticise all my toiletries, and over the years have managed to stop the shampoo, shower gel habit and swap them for bars, which has worked. But conditioner has always been a bit of Achilles heel. Until now i’ve Always been disappointed in conditioner bars, finding they just didn’t condition my hair , just kind of dry, sticky and heavy and take ages to use.

Until the last week, when i’ve Finally worked them out! Maybe you all knew this already, but just incase...... if you keep them in a little tin/tub/dish with a bit of water in the bottom, then when you come to use them they are already soft and have a slick of conditioner ready that you can rub into your hands and use easily. Also the little bit of water the bar has been sitting in has also absorbed the conditioner too and can be used!

Hope this helps someone else!

Ah! What a good tip! Thanks 😁

Andysbestadventure · 17/10/2019 19:36

It's why Lush used to sell them in tins originally

eddielizzard · 17/10/2019 19:36

Which shampoo and conditioner bars do you use? I've had some awful experiences and gave up. Would love to find something that actually works though...

inchoccyheaven · 17/10/2019 19:36

Can you recommend any bars ? I want to make the change and preferably want them to be natural and good for my highlighted hair.

icantfind · 17/10/2019 19:37

What conditioner do you use? I’ve found a shampoo bar and a body soap I love so conditioner is the last bottle in my shower.

Goldensunnydays81 · 17/10/2019 19:39

I have got the friendly conditioner bar which says on it that you can melt the whole bar in 600ml of boiling water and stir until it melts! I have just done 1/2 of my bar in a jam jar and it has been great as I really struggled with it before!

Cryalot2 · 17/10/2019 19:40

I used to use lush shampoo bars which were good.

CAG12 · 17/10/2019 19:45

Following! Id love to find out which bars are actually worth buying!

EntropyRising · 17/10/2019 19:50

Hats off to you, OP. I have really fallen short of the mark where toiletries are concerned.

Is there a low shampoo bar?

tiredybear · 17/10/2019 19:54

ah, great tip. i finally turned to bars about 2 months ago. lasted 6 weeks then couldn't bear it anymore..my hair was always so soapy and heavy - although it did look loads better. Which products would you recommend? Any that are 'curly girl' safe by any chance?

berringer · 17/10/2019 20:29

Personally I use ( long straight coloured hair , dry scalp )

Friendly shampoo bars ( currently lavender and tea tree) and Lush American cream conditioner bar.

There’s loads to try though

Here’s a few

Great tip about melting the friendly bars! Why didn’t I notice that? Doh!

That’s a good tip!

I use shampoo and conditioner bars, and ‘soap’ soap bars too, from Marie’s Artisan Soaps and have never had any problems.
They’re handmade in Scotland, are vegan and can be posted with no extra packaging if you’re being environmentally friendly.

I’ve got fininicky hair which is curly and swings between super dry and oily depending on what time of the month it is; and it likes to be babied, along with my sensitive scalp. Honestly, no irritated scalp, easy to rinse out and I don’t get that horrible sticky feel and I can dry my hair no probs (lush ones seem to make it tangled?) which is helpful now I’m growing it out.

Just had a peek and at the mo there’s 15% off for signing up for her news letter.

The Yorkshire soap company shampoo bars are lovely and I don't need to use conditioner anymore. Ive used two of them and both great. It helps to live in a soft water area though.

CherryPavlova · 17/10/2019 21:32

I use honey I shrunk shampoo bars bit have also failed with conditioner bars. I shall try again.

berringer · 17/10/2019 21:56

Great, thanks for the recommendations.

Yes try and and see if my tip helps you. It was a bit of a lightbulb moment when I realised that rubbing it on my hair didn’t work, so I was rubbing it on my hands instead and then using my slimy hands to transfer and finger comb it through my hair. But it took ages to get enough ooze off the bar to coat all my hair. One day i’d Accidentally left the bar sitting in the soap dish in s puddle, and I realised that it was far easier and quick to get a slimy lather on my hands quicker!

Thanks for the tip!

I bought my first shampoo bar last week and really loved using it! It's from Soul and Soap. I bought the passionfruit one and it smells fab.

bakesalesally · 17/10/2019 22:42

Ooooohhh good tip! We are new to them and loving it so far

KnitFastDieWarm · 17/10/2019 22:48

Ethique are a gamechanger for me. You can get them in Holland and Barrett. Vegan, palm oil free, cruelty free, plastic free, and they work really well.

Fruitbatdancer · 17/10/2019 22:49

Ok, this is a revelation. Hadn’t even occurred to me shampoo/ conditioner bars were a thing! I clearly live under a rock and am off to buy some online.

penguingorl · 17/10/2019 22:53
