To ask for benefit advice?

I’m asking on behalf of a friend’s daughter, do you know if a single working parent living with their parents would be able to apply for tax credits or any benefits other than child benefit. My friend thinks her and her husband’s income are taken into account not just her daughter who is the single parent. Thanks

Her parents' income won't affect her benefits.

She can.

You should check this as it might have changed but you always used to be able to claim tax credits if you lived with parents. They're related to your income and childcare costs and don't take into account other factors like rent costs or whether you get maintenance. However, this advice is 6 years old so still best to check it's still the case

She'll be able to claim universal credit. They only take the income of your household into account & even though she lives in the same house as her parents they are not part of her household.

Thanks everyone that is good to hear. My friend’s daughter has 2 jobs and earns around £950 per month and pays approximately £300 on childcare.

My daughter gets UC, she lives at home and they have never asked for our income details

Lunafortheloveogod · 17/10/2019 19:19

She can apply, it’ll probably be Uc not tax credits now though. Parents income won’t come into it but as she doesn’t have actual rent they won’t usually pay her anything for the housing allowance part. She could use entitledto to work out how much she’d be able to get from uc without applying.

Thank you, i thought this may be the case but my friend was convinced ‘household’ meant the whole household whereas I thought it meant her daughter and grandchild were their own little ‘household’.
