To be delighted that Sainsbury’s have decided not to sell fireworks this year?

Now just hoping the other supermarkets follow in due course.

Really? That’s fantastic, good on them.

user1497207191 · 17/10/2019 17:13

At least supermarket ones are more likely to be compliant with regulations for safety etc. The risk is that people will buy from "dubious" shops instead which may be selling counterfeit or low quality items and may be less "picky" about proof of customer age etc.

heath48 · 17/10/2019 17:14

Good.Hate fireworks that are not organised displays.

stripes23 · 17/10/2019 17:15

That's annoying where else would we buy them from? I love firework displays so do the children

Ronnie27 · 17/10/2019 17:17

I like watching fireworks and have never owned a dog who was scared of them but people around here lose their tiny Facebook minds about them. Grin

VivienScott · 17/10/2019 17:18

Thats rubbish! We all love fireworks in my house.

FredaFox · 17/10/2019 17:19

Teenagers have been letting them off for weeks in my mums village even when it’s light
It’s ridiculous and unsafe
Ban them other than from organised displays

AlternativePerspective · 17/10/2019 17:19

They’re antisocial and very few people use them responsibly. Personally I think they should be banned for private use and available for public licensed displays only.

No-one needs to buy fireworks. If people want to see them go to an organised display. The entry fee is no more than the money they’re spending on them from the supermarket.

👍

lanbro · 17/10/2019 17:20

Yesterday was the first day they could legally be sold and last night was ridiculous with people setting them off...I don't think they should be for general sale at all and should be limited to organised displays

Modwolvesrock · 17/10/2019 17:20

I think people who love fireworks should go to displays.
Safer for children and less likely to cause stress to animals.

stripes23 · 17/10/2019 17:21

Its not the same than doing your own, having a bbq and family around watching them together. Can't really do that at a display Confused

LemonScentedStickyBat · 17/10/2019 17:21

Always loads of displays to choose from. No need for them to be sold to the general public.

Banana770 · 17/10/2019 17:22

YANBU! I love fireworks, but like them being set off by professionals.

Minai · 17/10/2019 17:22

Good. I have no problem with people setting them off in their own gardens for a few days around bonfire night but the last few years we’ve had teenagers throwing them in the street. It annoys me to hear them weeks before or after bonfire night as it wakes my children and scares the cat!

SuzieBishop · 17/10/2019 17:22

Agree OP - they’re extremely anti social. The sale of them should be limited to organised displays only. My ex druggie neighbour used to love lighting a few late at night well into November.

Beamur · 17/10/2019 17:22

I won't be that sorry to have fewer fireworks going off and stressing my dog out.
But there are no organised displays near me any more. There used to be but have fallen by the wayside with the cost and management of the events.
I quite like the thrill of a few fireworks at home to be honest...

RushianDisney · 17/10/2019 17:23

Good on Sainsbury's. When we lived in Brixton this time of year was a nightmare because of teenagers throwing fireworks into the road. There is zero need for the public to need to buy explosives, they should be banned from sale entirely imo.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 17/10/2019 17:24

Great news.

Greatnorthwoods · 17/10/2019 17:24

It’s interesting how the hate of fireworks has grown in the UK.

Crusytoenail · 17/10/2019 17:25

Good on Sainsbury's, though I doubt it'll make much of a dent in firework month round here. My dog ends up like a stoner she's sedated so much. Don't mind at all a night or even a couple one on a weekend, but it's already started here random bangs and whizzes and will go on until at least mid November. It's about time the rules around buying them were enforced and setting them off randomly was taken seriously because it's bloody frustrating and miserable for most round here with small children and animals for a month.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 17/10/2019 17:26

The “hate” of fireworks has grown proportionally to the overuse of them.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/10/2019 17:26

Good. We live very centrally so very few people have gardens - and they are teensy anyway. So they are let off in the street, the park bus stops...etc.

There are brilliant displays put on (and you don’t need to pay) but they allow people to buy them willy nilly and the bangs go on for weeks.

Even professionals get hurt setting these off so they let kids buy them (yes I know there’s an age limit but how closely do they check?).

Floopily · 17/10/2019 17:27

Fireworks in residential areas are incredibly selfish IMO for a number of reasons. It wouldn't be quite so bad if it was just kept to Bonfire Night but it's pretty much a full month around here (actually heard some about an hour ago even though it's not dark out!). Terrifying for animals, and what about people with nervous / anxiety disorders or ex-servicemen with flashbacks or PTSD? Good on Sainsbury's. They should be banned from public sale altogether as far as I'm concerned.

TheQueef · 17/10/2019 17:27

Good.
They are abused here too.
Organised licences events only.
Some of these new Chinese ones are like military ordinance.
