To complain about this although I agreed to it

NC as my neighbours will know me 😂

I had to call the housing association recently as my outside light was broken and letting in water and kept tripping my fuse box

They disconnected it and came round today to replace it. When workman arrived he said he did not have any similar lights on his van so he would need to go buy one, or he had a ‘round light’ on his van I could have on instead. I didn’t see it but said yeah ok as I needed to collect DD from school in a bit. When he said round, I thought he meant a ball style lantern

I had a black lantern style outside light, which is in fitting with the whole street (new builds)

Well he has put up one of those very large round lights you find in car parks or walk ways. ConfusedBlush

It is so so very bright, it’s like a full on street lamp. It looks so out of place in the street now as well. I think it would actually be annoying for the neighbours as it’s so bright. I’m too embarrassed to turn it on

AIBU to complain even though I agreed and didn’t check first? Or suck it up and pay for my own replacement?

Of course you would be massively unreasonable to complain!

It's not your electrician's job to make design decisions. He asked you and you agreed.

GDPArrrghhh · 16/10/2019 19:50

Not unreasonable at all - totally different light and if you’re on a new build estate I imagine the managing agent won’t be too happy either.

SallyLovesCheese · 16/10/2019 19:51

Can you not complain, but instead say you made a mistake and that the light is now bothering the neighbours?

GeneHuntLover · 16/10/2019 19:51

It's not her electrician, he'll work for the HA

My NDN has one of those lights outside their house. It lights up the entire street when it's on.

I'd ring them up and be honest, you've had a change of heart and see what they say.

CAG12 · 16/10/2019 19:55

You agreed to it without checking it out.

But you COULD complain that its eay brighter than the old one and disturbing people.

Lesson learnt though!

Aquamarine1029 · 16/10/2019 19:58

Why can't you replace the bulb to one with a lower wattage?

Lettherebelesslight · 16/10/2019 20:01

I could replace the bulb (not sure what bulb they take) but it is really huge and ugly and not in keeping with the street we all have black lanterns. I think I am going to have to call them back but I will admit my mistake!

I suppose you could contact HA and just explain you weren't thinking properly and agreed without seeing the light. They might just change it for you.

Equally could the HA be within their rights to charge you for labour for their electrician to come back again?

BlankTimes · 16/10/2019 21:13

The HA have done as you asked and it's cost you nothing.

You now have a new safe working light that you didn't bother to check the appearance of, but have now decided you don't like the look of it.

If you want it changed, I think you should pay for a new one to match all the others in the the street and also pay for the electrician's time to come back and fix it, because now it's not a repair, (the HA have paid for that) it's a cosmetic replacement.

Paperthin · 16/10/2019 21:17

I think the HA will expect him to fit the same type of light, not a different type, especially on a new build. I’d call them and explain. They are the customer not you, he should not have asked you really, so it’s his mistake.

Lettherebelesslight · 16/10/2019 21:26

I feel stupid but I assumed it was a round ball lantern light, not an actual round bulkhead light and I had no idea it would be this bright as it was fitted in the daytime. It looks ridiculous and I can’t use it as it’s so bright so it’s not safer... the houses are close by and this would shine in their windows (it’s LED so not a soft light it’s a white light) also it doesn’t seem to have a sensor on it that comes on at at night or when someone walks past, you have to manually turn it on and off at the switch

I pay full rent and service charges (nearly £900pm) and this seems to be included within my rental agreement. He knew he was coming out to replace an outside light and didn’t bring one, the nearest shop is over 6 miles away and it would have taken even longer to fit, which is why I agreed!

I only had to have it replaced because the other one was badly fitted and tripped my whole fuse box out in when it rained!

It doesn’t have a lightbulb the LED is built in so I can’t even do that. I will pay for another light, I would be happy to do that
