Brexit and eye-watering price rises

Figmentofmyimagination · 16/10/2019 15:35

Went to replace a loved and well-worn pair of suede boots from a Swedish high street retailer bought 12 months ago for my DD as a Christmas gift. For the exact same pair, the price is up from £85 to £120. Too much for me. Thank you, slump in sterling. Let’s hope all those Northamptonshire shoemakers can step into the breach.

Can’t put a price on freedom etc.., but is anyone else noticing eye-watering price rises for imported goods?

I think most people are worried about the prices of basic food items to be honest.

RedSuitcase · 16/10/2019 15:51

Totally missing the point, but an £85 pair of leather boots should not have worn out by 12 months 😱

BarbedBloom · 16/10/2019 15:52

I am worried about food prices. We already shop frugally, are mostly veggie and don't buy treats. Even if prices rise by 5% I don't know how we will manage to eat.

wigglybeezer · 16/10/2019 15:53

I've just got back from a week's holiday in The Netherlands, the poor exchange rate definitely meant fewer holiday treats, not a serious problem but a shame if ongoing.

I read it as being that the DD had grown out of them, but it was just an assumption.

Figmentofmyimagination · 16/10/2019 16:11

She’s a student in her 20s and has worn them day in day out for the best part of a year, so I get why they have worn out since last year. It was meant to be a Christmas surprise as main present. I know people are worried about food prices but there is also a whole new normal around the price of ‘luxury’ items (just an adult pair of ankle boots, so not that luxurious, although they are lovely!)

Pound has dropped about 15-20% against the Euro since the referendum, so that price hike seems like more than just Brexit.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 16/10/2019 16:40

Well if suede boots are the only thing you have to worry about 🤷🏼‍♀️ Some of us are more concerned about vital medication and food.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 16/10/2019 16:41

I also agree that that much of a price hike is unlikely to be just brexit and I happily blame brexit for lots of things Grin

SilverySurfer · 16/10/2019 17:07

Do you not realise that companies are piling on the prices and using Brexit as an excuse?

I can't afford £85 for a pair of boots so hope you will excuse me for not being heartbroken.

PineappleLumps · 16/10/2019 17:14

John Lewis are selling a pair of boots I bought last year. They are the same price..all this brexit scaremongering is getting old!

Yaflamingalah · 16/10/2019 17:20

Boohoo. It’s a pair of boots not a loaf of bread. It’s a choice whether to buy them or not

Lowlandlucky · 16/10/2019 17:23

Maybe the retailer is using Brexit as an excuse for raising prices

AutumnRose1 · 16/10/2019 17:23

You scared me OP

I thought this was going to be about crucial items!

MrsMaiselsMuff · 16/10/2019 17:37

Anyone criticising the OP for not focusing on food and medication, it's not a race to the bottom. Prices are rising, we know that, let's not fight amongst ourselves as to who is worst affected! It's shit, our lives are being negatively affected for sod all good reason, we can all agree on that.

(Except silvery who thinks she's getting unicorns on November 1st!)

AutumnRose1 · 16/10/2019 17:43

"Prices are rising, we know that, let's not fight amongst ourselves as to who is worst affected"

No, I agree it's not a competition. Even if the subject was different, it is a bit "pricey luxury becomes pricier" which hardly justifies the title.

Tellmetruth4 · 16/10/2019 17:44

I don’t know why people are banging on about food, OP is allowed to buy nice boots and comment on the massive price hike. It’s not a race to the bottom where we should be all grateful and dare not complain unless we’re living in slums and fighting with wild dogs for food.

SchrodingersBox · 16/10/2019 18:01

The pound is pretty much the same value against the euro as it was a year ago. Whatever the cause of the price rise is it isn't Brexit.

Yaflamingalah · 16/10/2019 18:17

It couldn’t just be that the retailer is a greedy bastard and raising prices because they can - hoping that people will automatically conclude “ah must be Brexit.”

FuzzyPuffling · 16/10/2019 18:21

Or as Marie Antoinette said, "Let them wear flip flops"

tequilasunrises · 16/10/2019 18:31

I’ve thought petrol has been getting more expensive but that might be because I’ve started commuting with my 17 stone DH so using more Hmm
