AIBU to ask for advise about Dd’s ear?

My 15 year old DD’s eardrum burst two weeks ago. I took her to the GP who confirmed the likely diagnosis, and advised that if the deafness hadn’t improved in 2 weeks we were to return. No treatment.

While the deafness has largely gone, she still has an ear full of smelly pus.

I realise I shouldn’t put anything in it, but she's fed up with it, and it’s smell. How does the ear resolve? What happens the pus? Is there anything we can do to move it along? And if not, how long will it take to clear? Can the GP do anything?

TIA

I would go back to GP as that sounds infected. (I'm not a doctor)

I would put everything I own on tgat being an infection, poor dd must be fed up and feeling rotten, get to gp today and they'll likely start her on an antibiotic. Hope she's better soon!

My DS had recurrent ear infections. 2 different antibiotics didn't touch it. 3rd trip to GP got a locum who swabbed the gunk that was coming out of it and sent it away to be analysed so the right antibiotic could be prescribed. Never had a problem since funnily enough. I'd be asking your GP to do this

Ok thanks woodymiller.

Yes it is an infection, pus is white blood cells which gather together to engulf the bacteria. GP didn’t think she needed antibiotics as the eardrum has burst which they implied that meant the infection was mainly done. And as DD was obviously no longer ill with it, that sounded about right.
In the build up she was very deaf, feverish, congested, upset, slightly swollen eye on that side.
All these symptoms disappeared when it burst, the deafness got about 30% better.
It’s more how long does it take for the pus to clear itself up after the drum has burst?
At the moment I’m thinking I may take her back to GP.

I had a burst ear drum twice in my teens. It's caused by the infection so she needs antibiotics to clear the infection up.

I was always told that pus (esp with burst eardrum) = need antibiotics. Very, very surprised you weren't given them. Go back!
