To think that wanting to keep my CV updated shouldn't be an indication that I'm looking to move

Hi- to cut a long story short, I've been with the same employer for a few years and I've been invited by my company to go to a careers event in which there will be a CV clinic.

I was discussing the agenda with a colleague and when asked what I will go and see, I said I would be interested in the CV clinic as I don't think mine is very good. My boss may have been in earshot. Will he think I will be wanting to move and how should I approach this?

Yes
Take notes and update that cv pronto!

Yes, its like when people suddenly update their LinkedIn profile it’s a good indication they’re job hunting!

Thanks for the replies. I don't actually want to move. Should I approach him and clarify? But if he hasn't heard of it I don't want it to be awkward.

Also could I be fired over this? (UK)

I keep my CV up to date in case an internal position I'm interested in comes up. You could say the same if it comes up.

@chinam I work for a very large company and have done so for years. I have moved roles a few times and I'm fairly new in my latest role. I'm not even thinking of looking internally to be honest but I have been worrying that my CV must now be very old-fashioned/ out of date as even though I've updated it for role changes I've never re-written it!

I don’t see a problem. Your company invited you to go, and would know what’s there

In my company, even for internal roles we had to provide a cv, ( large company, various different departments and cities you could swap to so they wouldn’t necessarily know you)

You are simply taking th3 opportunity they have provided to you

I keep my linked in updated as I know people use it to size me up before I go to a meeting with them.... and I do it to others too!

I keep an up to date CV in case I see an internal or external position, as part of my CPD and use it as part of my appraisal.

Should I approach him and clarify?

No - your boss doesn't own you and you don't owe them an explanation.

Besides, how does it help to tell them you're not thinking of leaving? I often think it's better for employers to keep in mind that it's a possibility you might leave as you're less likely to be overlooked/taken for granted.

I also thought you might want it for internal promotions. Plus, it's always good to have an up-to-date CV for your salary reviews.

And in many client-facing roles where you pitch for work (such as law firms), it's essential to have an up-to-date cv to make you look more valuable for the firm's benefit.

I think you're overthinking it.
