To think that car and house alarms are a pointless nuisance?

They just annoy your neighbours. Nobody runs to help or check the property or even rings the police.

Bloody anti social behaviour, having those things.

Our house alarm goes to a security company.

If it's just a noise it might scare people away but the responsibility should not be put on neighbours to call the police.

Intruder alarms arent 'pointless' though are they?

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 15/10/2019 16:31

If alarms go off here we just lie in bed cursing and waiting for them to stop! Given that nearly all alarms are false, I would guess if you called the police then if they showed up at all it would be about six hours later.

We took our alarm out when we moved in here. We just have good outside lighting and a fake bell box.

I'm sorry you live somewhere with no community spirit.

I - and indeed so do my neighbours - go and check on alarms.

I currently don't have one - I am, however, getting one installed. It also brings my insurance premiums down nicely.

A few years ago we had a car alarm going off down our street for nearly 3 days, solidly. The owners were on holiday and none of the immediate neighbours had a contact number. In the end the police had to authorise a mechanic to open the hood and cut the circuit because so many people complained. We all got apology notes through the letterbox from the sheepish owners a few days later!!

Aquamarine1029 · 15/10/2019 16:36

The security system in my home is monitored 24/7, and if it is not deactivated within 30 seconds the police are called, so it's not just a blaring alarm sound.

pinkcardi · 15/10/2019 16:39

I investigate if my neighbour's alarm goes off. Last time it happened 3 other people also came out to investigate.

Rural village.

So completely useful here.

JasBBGG · 15/10/2019 16:51

Our alarm scared a burglar off once they got in so not pointless.
My parents however weren't so lucky and theirs was ripped off the wall by the intruders. They and we now have industrial strength ones designed to confuse the intruder and make them want to get out. If anyone gets in they will soon want to get out. Not pointless to protect what's yours.

tumbleisatwat · 15/10/2019 16:52

Big city.

No way is anybody going to go out at three in the morning to check on a strangers house or car.

Doesn't happen here and I've never known it to elsewhere.

They do keep people awake...

It's always the same ones too.

If you are in the house at night and the intruder alarm goes off, it may be the difference between a violent assault or a rape and a person being scared off. This just happened to a neighbour and the intruder had fled after the alarm went off.

Saddler · 15/10/2019 16:56

Neighbours do check here, they form a very useful purpose.

MsMcMurphy · 15/10/2019 17:21

Rural village here and ours is quite sensitive;
sometimes triggered by dust or spiders (I assume). Trouble is our house insurance would be invalid if it was not constantly armed so we have no choice but to keep in turned on. Never had anyone come by to check it out when it goes off in our absence though.

SerenDippitty · 15/10/2019 17:27

Our house alarm goes off automatically after 4 minutes.

Timeywimey10 · 15/10/2019 17:31

I can see the point of a house alarm but not a car alarm.
