To not know why you need an app for your washing machine?!

Looking at washing machines as mine has given up this morning. My current one is 14 years old so I'm out of the loop a little.
I just can't understand why you would need an app for a washing machine? Am I missing out here or just out of date!
Thinking of renting one, anyone do this and think it's a good idea?

It works well for me. My laundry room is in the basement, so how do I know when the wash load is done without trekking down there? My app tells me. Genius. Saves popping up and down the whole time to see if it’s done.

vinoandbrie
That makes sense!
I think I'm just out of date as the last machine I had didnt even have a screen, just a dial!
Maybe time to get on board with it!

Some people like apps.

DP has an app linked via Bluetooth to his toothbrush. Fuck knows why...

Slappadabass · 14/10/2019 22:35

My new dryer has a app, haven't bothered downloading it, seems totally pointless!

SouthernComforts · 14/10/2019 22:36

My washer and dryer are the same brand and can be controlled by an app, apparently. It's probably possible to set up a group chat between the three of us, but I haven't bothered!

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 14/10/2019 22:39

No. I just can’t see the point.

But then again things that can be controlled by apps and Alexa freak me out. I would feel as though the house was haunted and fear the day they all got together and ganged up together for a robot uprising.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/10/2019 22:39

The fridge in a holiday apartment we stayed in last year had wifi Confused.

I'm also baffled by wifi kettles. You still have to go up to them to put water in them, so why wouldn't you just switch them on at the same time?

As for washing machine apps, you know how long the cycle is, so if you wanted to know when it was going to finish, not that you need to be there at the time that it finishes, you'd just think 'it's 7 am now, it takes two hours, so it will be done at 9 am' wouldn't you? No app needed.

BeanBag7 · 14/10/2019 22:44

Seems a bit pointless to me. The only reason I can see if to have your washing machine start at a set time. But my washing machine has a timer so you can set it to start in 3 hours or whatever anyway.

ChoccieEClaire · 14/10/2019 22:45

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil
I definitely feel the same about the Alexa type devices!

I have no idea why you would need an app for your toothbrush and what use a wifi kettle would be just confuses me Confused

More programs on the app than on the actual washing machine. Also very easy on the app to make adjustments to programs.

Our Washing Machine has an app.

It's ridiculous. It literally, literally solves no problem for me.

We set it up when the machine was new, on all our phones. Seemed to have a start stop option, great.

Except... It turns out that you need to press the paired phone onto the control panel to configure the wash load and start/stop/pause. NOT use it remotely as I'd assumed.

We've used it about three times because it takes 10x as long. Oh, my phone's in the sitting room (washing machine is in kitchen).. or, oh it's not paired, give it 20 seconds to reconnect.. or, stand waving it near the control panel for a bit, kinda like self scan checkouts.. utterly useless!

Or, I can do all that in about 2 seconds with 100% reliability.. by pressing the actual physical button Hmm

It's a silly "feature", it's like they came up with a solution to a problem no one has!

Aquamarine1029 · 14/10/2019 22:55

Why do some slow cookers have Wi-Fi and apps? It's fucking ridiculous.

Drizzzle · 14/10/2019 22:57

You still have to load, unload, hang and fold/iron yourself. And put washing powder in....i the app did all that I'd consider downloading one.

ChoccieEClaire · 14/10/2019 22:57

NoraThePessimist
Grin that made me laugh! I could imagine me doing something similar!
We've always survived with an actual button so why is that an issue that needs solving!

Aquamarine1029
I'm so out of touch, my slow cooker has a dial on the front with the options, off warm, low and high and that's it!

Not sure how it could be easier than pushing one button the actual machine you're standing in front of.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/10/2019 23:03

We've just got an app enabled cat flap.

It supposedly says when the cats are in or out of the house but it's not clever enough to tell the difference between actual coming and going and just pissing about in the vicinity so it often gets it wrong but what it does do is confirm that the cats that sneak in or out when we are asleep or out at work are alive and well so it's worth it for that function alone as when you realise that you haven't seen a particular cat for a while, the app will tell you when it has been through the catflap recently.

BammBamm · 14/10/2019 23:07

We have an app for our washing machine. I actually really like it. There's a wash assistant to help with things that you don't wash everyday and sometimes I forget what time the wash is due to finish and I'm lazy Grin

Thehagonthehill · 14/10/2019 23:11

Only Amy point if the app.put the washing on the line/dryer and folded it afterwards.

BillyAndTheSillies · 14/10/2019 23:24

If the app told me when the washing or drying cycle had finished I'd love it.

Our utility room is at the bottom of our garden and I can't always see the screens from the kitchen to know whether it's finished. As the weather gets more grim I imagine I'll be doing less laundry to save me going down the garden.

My machines adjust their timings based on the load, so I can't even just put a timer on because the times change. First world problems.

MongerTruffle · 14/10/2019 23:26

As for washing machine apps, you know how long the cycle is, so if you wanted to know when it was going to finish, not that you need to be there at the time that it finishes, you'd just think 'it's 7 am now, it takes two hours, so it will be done at 9 am' wouldn't you? No app needed.

Many washing machines adjust the time depending on the load.

Amanduh · 14/10/2019 23:31

I don’t understand most of them but the slow cooker app is actually great, because it’s something that is often left on in our house for a long period of time. You can adjust the cooking time and warm it, shorten it, lengthen it etc and turn on and off with the app, that one is really handy!

GooseFeather · 14/10/2019 23:31

Ours has one. DH downloaded it, set it all up and trundled off to work. The first time it alerted him to the load having finished, he rang me to tell me. I know it's fucking finished, I work from home, and my desk is 4 foot from the fucking machine. I don't need to be ring up and instructed to hang its contents up to dry.

He deleted the app shortly after, as it was that or he was going to get shoved into the washing machine for the next load.
