To ask how and where you store your butter?

I've only just recently switched from buying and using margarine to real butter. I now have a dilemma I need to sort before my head explodes. I don't know much about butter and where it should be stored but I've always thought that keeping it out on the counter in my butter dish for too long means it will go bad so I always always keep it in the fridge. Which is a pain in the backside when it comes to making sandwiches Grin I just can't bring myself to give us all food poisoning!! So my question here is - do you keep your butter in the fridge or leave it out on the counter? If so, how long is it safe to do so?

A glass butter dish on my worktop in the kitchen.

MsMustDoBetter · 14/10/2019 21:56

Butter in the butter dish. Stored in the fridge during summer, but otherwise left out.

LaLaLovely · 14/10/2019 21:57

Can anyone recommend a stylish dish - something a bit modern?

DragonMamma · 14/10/2019 21:57

I’ve found my people 😍

I have a porcelain butter dish on the side and leave it out all year.

We do have a pack of clover in the fridge for when it gets really cold and DH needs to do the kids sandwiches. They don’t truly appreciate the beauty of really butter though and so IDGAF really...I wouldn’t eat that shite.

GetRid · 14/10/2019 21:58

Butter dish with lid. We get through a pack every 3-4 days. Never goes off.

Occasionally need to microwave a slice if the weather's really cold.

It's also right by the toaster for convenience

Notthebradybunch · 14/10/2019 21:59

Keep mine in a butterdish on the worktop, always have done and it's never gone off.

Solihooley · 14/10/2019 22:01

On the side in a dish. It’s never gone bad, mainly because it won’t be around long. I’ve never known butter go off, must be the salt?

Redshoeblueshoe · 14/10/2019 22:03

Lala there is a link to the butterfish thread on page 1

dementedpixie · 14/10/2019 22:04

I certainly wouldn't pay £30 for it

LaLaLovely · 14/10/2019 22:05

Thanks Solihooley 👍🏼

dementedpixie · 14/10/2019 22:06

@augustine77

In our butter dish on the worktop.

When it's very hot (30 C plus) outside, it goes in the fridge, otherwise it turns to liquid!

sproutsandparsnips · 14/10/2019 22:07

In a butter dish. Only in the height of summer might I need to refrigerate it as it may liquefy.

LaLaLovely · 14/10/2019 22:08

There’s also a ‘best butter’ thread over on Chat 🤣

Clearly none of you have opportunistic cats. Current DCat probably wouldn't bother but last DCat adored any butter or substitute. If you left a closed tub on the side, it would be knocked to the floor then batted until the lid came off so he could lick it. A butter dish would just make this easy for him. A mere paper wrapping meant Christmas had come early. It presented serious challenges when I wanted butter soft enough to butter bread for cucumber sandwiches!

dementedpixie · 14/10/2019 22:12

My cats dont bother about butter so ours is safe sitting out

kateandme · 14/10/2019 22:16

Funnily enough Corneys we've always had lot of cats and are fully aware of the need to keep food safe from them, but they've never gone near the butter dish.

We know to keep any defrosting meat or fish in the microwave, and they will go after knives, plates etc that have butter on them, but they've never gone as far as breaking into the butter dish, which is remarkable, come to think of it.

We did have one greedy fat fucker, sadly now departed and we couldn't even leave pouches of his food accessible, because he would rip them open, but he never got into the butter dish.

clary · 14/10/2019 22:20

We have a China butter dish we have had for more than 20 years wh
high is good going for me with something breakable!

Butter goes in, is used, dish is washed and a new block goes in. Butter fiends in this house so it never goes off. I guess a block lasts about 3-4 days? My kitchen is pretty cool (north facing) so it's only super soft on a very hot day.

TowerRingInferno · 14/10/2019 22:23

Butterdish left out except on about 5 days a year when it gets too hot

Fizzypoo · 14/10/2019 22:25

I have the glass cow butter dish.

We go through a block of butter every week. The only acceptable version of butter that isn't butter is lurpak.

My block of butter lasts all week without going off. My dp microwaves the butter sometimes and it does my head in! It still doesn't go rancid though.

PigletJohn · 14/10/2019 22:36

can never find a lid, though.
