I'm 38 weeks pregnant tomorrow. Have gestational diabetes so my list of restricted foods suddenly grew to include sugar and white carbs at 28 weeks when I was diagnosed. I'm getting pretty fed up now Angry!

There's a French market in my city this week. Would I be hugely U to hit the soft cheese and pate? I am doing OK without most of the things I'm not allowed but am really craving lovely stinky Camembert and pate on toast mmmm.... (Drifts off into food coma daydream)

French pregnancy advise is any pasteurised cheese is allowed.
You could ask at the market which ones are pasteurised (some of the soft gooey ones are) and you'll be fine.
(my french consultant even okayed me having a small glass of champagne in my last week of pregnancy).
Paté was a no though.

BravoStrong · 14/10/2019 21:53

Pate is fine so long as you're not eating mountains of it.

Soft cheese is fine so long as it's pasteurised which I suspect most will be.

Blue cheeses are find unless you're prone to contracting food poisoning from the mould.

But if you are worried, then put some in the fridge for after the birth.

Imthevoice · 14/10/2019 21:55

You can freeze most cheese. In fact St Delia of Norfolk recommends it - to make sure your cheese is at the perfect stage of ripeness when you eat it. 😂

reluctantbrit · 14/10/2019 21:57

Get some, talk to the vendor and ask for some which lasts for 3 weeks.

We went to France when I was 20 weeks, such a disaster. I didn’t think about it when DH suggested visiting a friend.

The day after I gave birth I send DH to the Sainsbury’s next to the hospital to get me Parma ham and Brie and I had a feast in the post natal ward.

Tweetingmagpie · 14/10/2019 21:57

Eat the cheese.

caringcarer · 14/10/2019 21:58

YOu have waited for 38 weeks so you can do 2 more OP. Honestly get some cheese and ask someone else to keep it for you so you are not tempted. Try to take your mind off of it.

RB68 · 14/10/2019 21:59

buy the Camembert whole - they age it after all so another couple of weeks won't hurt it. As others say you can have it baked with nice crusty brown bread. Cheese is def not a carb!!!

RB68 · 14/10/2019 22:01

ps I also had GD and now am type 2 but not unexpected (in family, pcos and fat fair and a bit more than 40)

Emma198 · 14/10/2019 22:02

You can eat them cooked can't you? Get the cheese and deep fry it. Even better.

cdtaylornats · 14/10/2019 22:04

www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-weight/why-we-need-to-eat-carbs/

The NHS never mentions "white carbs"

Anotherunimaginativeusername · 14/10/2019 22:05

I know someone who caught listeria from soft cheese at their going-on-maternity-leave work celebration, around the same stage of pregnancy as you. Her baby was born very sick and did not survive. I wouldn't risk it.

TatianaLarina · 14/10/2019 22:08

You can get Camembert in Waitrose so I don’t really see the point.

Ime you can only freeze hard cheese. Softer stuff goes weird when you unfreeze.

ODFOx · 14/10/2019 22:09

Buy it now and freeze. (buy LOTS!)
It's only 2 weeks. You'd be mad to risk it now.

SarahAndQuack · 14/10/2019 22:11

Waitrose Camembert is a bit shit, though, isn't it? It's made for people who consider a bit of ooze improper and injurious to their social aspirations.

Alloftheboys · 14/10/2019 22:11

Nothing useful to add but my “well done for giving birth” treat is to be served pâté on toast by OH when getting home from hospital.

TatianaLarina · 14/10/2019 22:24

Camembert is shit full stop if you ask me.

SarahAndQuack · 14/10/2019 22:27

Grin Fair enough, it's not everyone's cup of tea.

Happymum12345 · 14/10/2019 22:42

Yes, freeze it or keep it well wrapped in the fridge and it should be fine for a couple of weeks. I hope all goes well with your birth.

VenusStarr · 14/10/2019 22:47

Eek @Secretlifeofme!! Can't believe where that time has gone, not long til you meet your little one 😍❤️ wishing you all the best xxx

Ps, eat all the cheese and pate once baby is here 😊

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 14/10/2019 22:48

You'll only worry and won't enjoy it.

Tell family and friends to bring cheese and paté instead of flowers and chocolates after the baby is born. I would go out of my way to find the best if one of my friends was in your situation. :o

CaptainNelson · 14/10/2019 22:49

I'd go with the above - fine if the milk is pasteurised. I avoided unpasteurised, which I think is what is advised in France. Don't know about pate, I think I'd be more cautious with that.
And yes, you can have a glass of something. Your baby will not develop foetal alcohol syndrome.
Good luck when the baby does come!

zoobaby · 14/10/2019 22:49

SecretLife, are they inducing you at 38 weeks? Could you buy some for you to scoff after the birth?

GettingABitDesperateNow · 14/10/2019 22:52

You can freeze cheese but some work better than others and unfortunately the more gooey they are the more they are affected. It's mainly the texture that's affected not the taste. Things like brie are ok

GabsAlot · 14/10/2019 22:53

i wouldnt do pate u dont know how long its been hanging around

PineappleLumps · 14/10/2019 22:53

@TatianaLarina not sure they have Waitrose in China..
