To think Harry Dunn's family are being exploited?

To be clear, I feel desperately sorry for his family and wish there was some way for them to get justice, but..

..there has never been the slightest chance of his alleged (accidental) killer being returned to the UK. No country would return the spouse of a member of their security services in these circumstances, but particularly not the US. It is therefore cruel and exploitative of the media and politicians to pretend to his family that 'raising the issue at high level' will make the slightest difference. It is wrong to give them false hope.

It is probable that she was "ordered" to leave the UK by the US authorities, and if you are overseas due to your (or your DH's ) employer it would be very difficult to refuse. She can however decide to return now and nobody could stop her from doing that.
I think it would be the sensible thing for her to do now, otherwise she will never be able to move on with her life.

Oh, and there are always reminders to drive on the left at the gate (inside) of US military bases in the UK.

LemonPrism · 16/10/2019 13:45

Why are the media exploiting them? They're the ones choosing to go over there, they're the ones speaking out.

The media is just reporting on news. It's not a fucking conspiracy

Does the media report everything that happens in the world, every day, then? Or does it make choices about which stories to cover and how to frame them?

The tabloids are pro-Harry's parents now. The next phase will be finding dirt on them. They are just fodder.

Op with you completely. Nothing anyone says is going to take the pain away nor is it going to bring that person to justice. I did think she is a mum that had children or child in the car at that time. If so why is not takeing responsibility for her actions? It is so sad for Harrys family and the little witness.

I actually think they may be trying to shame her by getting as much publicity as possible.

The first I heard of all of this was when I heard senior police officer speaking on the radio
While stopping (just) short of saying she was guilty he gave such a lot of information that said to me there was no way she was ever going to trial

When a foreign diplomat (Ukranian I think) commited a similar crime in the US the US put pressure on for the driver to be returned to the USA so there is a possibility.

Otherwise, as she no longer has diplomatic immunity, the family can take her to court for damages, it won't give her a conviction but might give the family some closure.

I do think there are things our government could do to attempt to stop this happening again, and to put pressure on the US to send her back.

I'm thinking making US service personnel sit a UK driving test before they are allowed to drive over here or force the US bases to have a proper 'crossover' where you can't just turn out of a junction onto a road.

Shocking story I read today. They were summoned to the Whitehouse to meet Trump, who then sprung on them that she was in the Whitehouse. Terrible.

tillytrotter1 · 17/10/2019 22:19

Can we assume that her husband will also be leaving the country to join his wife? Did I read somehwere that this isn't her first major road accident? We listened to Trump's press conference with the Italian PM yesterday morning as we waited to leave for the airport in the US, he was asked about the case afterwards and seemed very put out that they wouldn't meet her, it's not often that he gets told to stuff it in his own house!

Not true, we live near a major US base and there are none, nor were there any Rechts fahren outside our barracks in Germany.

similarminimer · 18/10/2019 07:54

I agree that it is about publicity to shame her into coming back voluntarily

Dickorydockwhatthe · 18/12/2019 18:34

I was watching this on the news this morning. Although it's awful that she has fled, I do feel sorry for her if it was a genuine accident. Would she really get a custonial sentence even if she killed him by accident?? I do feel for the family.

Patroclus · 18/12/2019 18:50

If they make the next arse who does this think twice, good luck to them.

woooah craig murray is a conspiracy nut who waves his credentials around. He was sacked for some very. very unsavoury behaviour.
