Gas works and baby

We have gas works this week and they will switch off our gas for 12 hours. I have a small baby. Somebody need to be at home all day as they need access to switch on and off. Do you think it would be ok to stay home with the baby? I will have to use a convection heater in our bedroom to keep in warm. Haven’t really used it before but assume it should be able to keep a small space warm. I could ask my mum to take him but would prefer not to as she has a lot on at the moment.

How old is your baby? You do know small babies predate gas central heating by many many millennia right? They need their mums close by more than they need the radiators on. Convection heater should be fine. Layers and cuddles and hot drinks. You’ll be grand, i hope your gas issue gets sorted.

Bunnybigears · 14/10/2019 16:53

Unless you are living somewhere very cold or have a poorly baby you probably wont even need to use the heaters surely?

DartmoorChef · 14/10/2019 16:56

It's really not that cold. I'm sure you will both survive. Grin

Expressedways · 14/10/2019 16:59

I would pump your heating up a few degrees over your normal temp before the gas workers arrive- we had temperatures of -50 last winter and this was official advice before it hit! Then dress baby in some warm layers. You’ll be fine for 12 hours providing you don’t live somewhere ridiculously cold.

MrsMoastyToasty · 14/10/2019 17:00

The recommended room temperature for a sleeping baby is 16-20c . My lounge is currently 18c. We don't have any heating on and it's not cold.

Jadefeather7 · 14/10/2019 17:04

@Expressedways good idea

Thanks all. I will do extra layers. I just get worried about overheating when he’s sleeping and not sure whether vest, babygrow and 1.5 RoF sleeping bag is sufficient or if more is needed.

It will be fine. We just had our pipes replaced last week. It really wasn't a problem at all and they came in at 8.30 to switch off and then I let them know I had to go out for school runs and they said "yep fine we will come and switch back on later when you're home." Switched us back on about 4pm.
So you could probably go out anyway, it's worth asking.

AloeVeraLynn · 14/10/2019 17:09

That was for the mains by the way. For them to replace our individual pipe it took them literally 20 mins in our house.

maternityleave234 · 14/10/2019 17:11

@Jadefeather7 are you in the Uk?
I’ve not switched our heating on yet 🙈 we are in the north of England and have a 7 week old... so you should be okay!

Jollitwiglet · 14/10/2019 17:11

You'll be fine. Just pop your hand on baby's chest or back to keep an eye on how warm they are, then add or remove layers as needed

MadameButterface · 14/10/2019 17:11

Aww op I remember those days well

there’s a good infographic here

Do you have a room thermometer? Mine had the gro egg ones, they double as a little nightlight. It’s a good investment if you find you get anxious about this sort of thing, which most people do, it’s normal.

WeDidNotChangeTheLocks · 14/10/2019 17:40

@Jadefeather7 hope this helps. I'd recommend a groegg too as the weather gets colder
