To not have handed this money in?

Doctroo · 12/10/2019 15:21

At work a month or so ago, I found some money. It was in the grass well away from everything: a two-pound coin, and a pound coin, 3 quid.

I was told by a colleague I should have handed this in.

3 quid? Really?

Now if it had been a fiver or a tenner I might would have handed it in, but 3 quid? WIBU?

Hand it in to who? Of course you were not being unreasonable.

iklboo · 12/10/2019 15:23

Handed it in to whom? Not sure the police would be interested in £3 or anyone would report it missing.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 12/10/2019 15:24

I wouldn’t have handed it in but these days I would have dropped it into the next charity box I saw. Years ago when we had hardly anything I would have said a prayer of thanks and bought some food.

northernknickers · 12/10/2019 15:38

Your colleague is being utterly ridiculous! £3 in coins? 😂

SmileCheese · 12/10/2019 15:43

Who does your colleague suppose you were meant to hand it in to? If there was no one nearby who you could have checked with to see if they had lost the money then what else were you meant to do?

cantfindname · 12/10/2019 15:50

A bit different to the sanctimonious church-going saint I knew who found what was obviously someone's pension outside the PO and pocketed it!

Pop it in a charity box then it will do someone some good.

Wheat2Harvest · 12/10/2019 16:22

Who would you have handed it in to? The police? It would have generated more than £3 worth of admin time in logging it and so on. I'd have kept it as it was such a small amount but wouldn't have said anything.

Years ago I was on the receiving end of railway lost property and was amazed at the minor nature of some of the stuff handed in. The best thing ever was a paper bag with half a dozen Tampax in it. The man at the station had described them on the form as ear plugs.

Passthecherrycoke · 12/10/2019 16:24

What do you mean though, at work? Where do you work?

Because I know that If you work in a shop and keep money dropped in store you’re risking the sack of the company find out. Happened to someone I know - and they had been reported by a co worker who witnessed it

If you’re talking about money dropped in a public park next to your office it’s obviously completely different

darkriver19886 · 12/10/2019 16:25

I recently found a £5 outside the shop. I had £0 in the bank and no food in the cupboards, I kept it. However, next time I got paid I donated a £5 to a charity box.

darkriver19886 · 12/10/2019 16:26

However more than that I would have handed it in.

Lifecraft · 12/10/2019 16:27

Brazil doesn't have an extradition treaty with the UK. So if you're thinking of fleeing the country following your £3 theft, that's the place to head for.

melj1213 · 12/10/2019 16:33

Depends where you work and where you found the item.

I work in a supermarket and if an employee finds anything on store premises - including the car park - we have to hand it in to customer services and can get in trouble if we don't and it gets reported.

Also, I used to work in a school £3 could have been a child's dinner money or bus fare home so f I found it on school premises or very close by then I would have handed it in to the school reception or at least told them that I had found some money so if a child asked about lost money then to send them to me.

CornishCreation · 12/10/2019 17:04

Sounds like she was just trying to look the good citizen by making out she would have. Maybe you should have given it to her to hand in to see if she did.

I would have bought a lotto ticket!

Fantie · 12/10/2019 17:06

I wouldn’t of handed it in...

It’s £3, not even worth walking to the destination to hand it in! To much effort.

Mephisto · 12/10/2019 17:07

Why did you even tell her? Confused

LoyaltyBonus · 12/10/2019 17:13

In those situations I put it in the next charity tin I see.

rainingallday · 12/10/2019 17:13

LOL, of course not. Why hand £3 in! If I found £300 I would keep it.

But then I am a bit of a cunt. Blush Grin

Teddybear45 · 12/10/2019 17:16

What does your work policy say? Mine says wuite clearly that all lost property, including money, belongs to the company if the original owner cannot be found.

ImNotYourGranny · 12/10/2019 17:21

Depends on where you work and where you found it really. Without that info we can't really say.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/10/2019 17:22

I have handed in a tenner, before now - well, ds3 found it and we handed it in - it wasn’t claimed and he got it back later on - but I wouldn’t do it for £3 in coins.

bellinisurge · 12/10/2019 17:32

If it was at my place of work, I would have handed it into reception. If it was on the street I was have put it in a charity box. Not because I am super virtuous but because I feel uncomfortable having someone else's money in my possession.

littleorangecat22 · 12/10/2019 17:32

I'd hand money in if i find it in a shop/busniess/workplace etc., but not if i found it outside unless it was a big amount. A few quid I'd chuck it in a charity box. Nobody's going to go out looking for a few quid. You didn't do anything wrong.

Babybel90 · 12/10/2019 17:54

I would’ve just kept it unless there was a reasonable chance of finding its owner or it was a significant amount. No doubt you’ll get loads of people telling you they would give it to charity or hand it in or the person who lost it might starve to death without that last £3, but if anyone was in such dire straights surely they’d be more careful with their cash?

I found a fiver in a chain cafe not long ago, it wasn’t near a table and I’d been the only customer in there about 30 minutes so I pocketed it, if I’d handed in to the staff I reckon they would’ve just kept it anyway. I’ve probably lost money before without noticing so I’m sure it all equals out.

I did find £20 in Asda last week and thought someone in the queue in front of me must have dropped it, but it was a big queue and I didn’t want to say out loud in case someone just took it, I saw a young lad look panicked at the till when he realised he’d lost it so I knew it was his straight away, otherwise I would’ve handed it in to the store manager.

SerenDippitty · 12/10/2019 18:20

Were you actually on work premises when you found the money?

fadingfast · 12/10/2019 18:31

I found £5 in the street outside M&S recently. It was neatly folded in half and I expect it had fallen out of some bloke's pocket when he got his phone out. I was a bit flummoxed about what to do so I waited a few minutes to see if anyone was obviously looking for it. I didn't think there was any point handing it into the shop. Luckily I spotted a homeless person sat in a nearby doorway so I gave it to him Halo.

I wouldn't have felt right keeping it but equally I don't think there's any point handing in small sums of money.
