Vegan diets and osteoporosis

"Building strong bones during childhood will provide protection against the fragile bone disease osteoporosis later in life." Quote from NHS website.
Aibu to worry that this is not widely known, and when we are encouraged to go vegan to save the planet (which I support btw) we should also be told how to ensure our children get enough calcium and vit D?
Osteoporosis is a devastating condition particularly affecting post menopausal women, causing severe pain and disability when fragile bones break. It's very common but many women only find they have it when they break a hip or wrist, often just after menopause, when it's very difficult to treat, due to lack of bone-building hormone oestrogen.

I wasn't talking about HCP's.

Osteoporosis is not a calcium deficiency disease it's a calcium leeching disease so added calcium doesn't help. What helps is low sugar, low carb (no grains and cereals) as they deplete minerals (like calcium) and vitamins.

As for a vegan diet saving the planet please read some non vegan propaganda. Cows aren't the cause of global warming.

Although cows do produce some methane, this addition to climate change is miniscule compared to the carbon that is removed from the atmosphere by grazing animals. When cows eat grass (just like in the wild), they cause the grass to dump carbon into the soil (because the grass has a symbiotic relationship with the soil fungus, providing it with sugar - a 6-carbon molecule - in exchange for micronutrients) sequestering carbon from the atmosphere and creating up to a foot of topsoil/year.

If the earth's grasslands were covered in cattle, it would completely reverse climate change in our lifetime

Our society is already eating a plant based diet (even meat eaters are eating mainly plants) and it is playing havoc with our health. Ironically, mass agriculture of grains and beans is actually the cause of desertification (removal of topsoil), which has contributed more carbon to the atmosphere and climate change than ALL fossil fuel use combined. Plant based diets are actually causing climate change, and grazing cows is one of the only things that can reverse it. And red meat is actually the healthiest food for the human body. Humans aren't grainivores, we don't have a gizzard (the organ that grinds grains into flour in the animal's body) and grains are one of the newest foods to be added to the human diet.

Here is a short ted talk which shows the power of putting MORE cows into an environment to reverse desertification.

Great post! Grin

@8stoneloser my understanding is that less than 10% of cattle is in grass pasture and 90% is on intensive farming, so yes of course the picture of a cow lazily eating grass outdoor in a romantic view, the reality is that most animals are in barns, even those grass feed. It just means they are given grass to eat not that they are outside in a field happily moving around. It is just not doable, there is not enough land . A grazing cow need 1.8 acre, that's roughly 7300 squared meters . Where do we put all these cows? There are 1.5 BILLION of head of cattle. That is a lot of land, you do the math, where is this land? The water?

And honestly that is a lot of killing. You can't deny the horror of slaughterhouses. There is no such thing as humane killing. You think the animal don't know, that they are not scared, that they don't hear the distressed cries of the animals in front of them, that they feel no pain? who are you kidding?

On TED talks you have both sides pro-meat and pro vegan. I would say there re slightly more ted talks AGAINST meat and cattle farming than in favour .

I think we can prevent osteoporosis and fractures without eating animals or drinking their milk.

Veganism may be getting more attention but it’s nothing new, people from all over the world have followed vegan diets and lead healthy lives without bone issues. As long as you ensure you are getting the right nutrients then you’ll be fine.

There are people who struggle with following a vegan diet for other health issues of course, but generally it’s all ok.
