To get an Uber home from IKEA?

I don’t drive but I live close to an IKEA - would I be unreasonable to buy a full sized mirror (70x150 cm) and hire an Uber to bring it home? It would cost me less than the £29/£39 IKEA truck delivery fee. I would tip the driver of course.

If I do it, should I definitely hire an Uber XL or would a normal Uber taxi suffice?

I don't see why not. My DD emptied the contents of her room at uni (a LOT of boxes) into an UberXL and transported it to a storage facility whereby she decanted all. The Uber driver seemed unperturbed.

DeathStare · 11/10/2019 18:29

Eh? Why would that be unreasonable? People go shopping and get a taxi home with their purchases all the time.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 11/10/2019 18:33

Make sure that the Uber is large enough to fit a mirror that is 1.5 meter in. Otherwise I don’t see a problem

Lhastingsmua · 11/10/2019 18:33

Ah see my thinking is it’s a massive mirror vs just some carrier bags - I can imagine a taxi driver thinking ‘wtf’ if they weren’t aware in advance, they might have to adjust their seats or clear out the boot or whatever. Feel like a bit of a CF almost?

Our ikea has a taxi ordering desk near the exit. They arrange taxi shares of people doing this and living in the same direction. Have big people carriers to cope with everyone's stuff

MilliePotts · 11/10/2019 18:36

I recently did an IKEA trip and got refused by the Uber when it arrived because he didn't want to put the back seats down. Definitely hire the XL to save you any cancellation fees.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 11/10/2019 18:37

I don’t know many cars that have a boot that is 1.5 metres long..
You would probably needed someone with a seven seater who could put the seats down.

Rezie · 11/10/2019 18:42

I Once had luggage and was planning on getting an uber. I was reading online if this is ok and the opinions and practises were very different. Some don't even take luggage. Some do but refuses to assist with them. Some are totally fine.

I think it might be a bit risky.

Lhastingsmua · 11/10/2019 19:05

Yeah they’ll probably have to put the seats down which may very well be inconvenient for them.

As I don’t drive I’m not sure if the mirror sprawled out across the seats/boot may impact his view of some of the windows too.

Um... put it upside down?

runoutofnamechanges · 11/10/2019 19:12

I've done it before but not with anything that would need the seats putting down. Might it fit on the back seat? Or in the back seat footwell, slightly at an angle IYSWIM?

The Ikea taxis were really expensive last time I used them but you could call the store to get a quote. You could try a local minicab service for a quote. Lots here (London) do an Ikea service where they will pick up the item for you so you don't even have to go.

A word of warning though, if you do get an Uber my local Ikea has one way system that when you turn off the main road into the retail park requires you to drive all the way around the Ikea building in a circle to get to the pick up point in the car park. The Uber system thinks that the car has arrived at the pick up point when it turns off the main road so if it takes them too long to get round the one way system to you it is cancelled.

ooooohbetty · 11/10/2019 19:12

YABU getting an Uber anywhere. Support your local taxi companies. Lots round here have taxi vans that do ikea runs.

PleasePassTheCoffeeThanks · 11/10/2019 19:12

There are usually taxis at the Ikea exit (on the parking) and a phone inside to call local minicab companies.
We have done it, and as they know you are calling from Ikea they will ask what you have to transport and will send a vehicule that can accomodate it.

tttigress · 11/10/2019 19:18

I have done this before with a much larger item, YANBU, you are actually doing them a favour by giving them business.

Lhastingsmua · 11/10/2019 19:23

@bridgetreilly I didn’t mean the mirror’s reflection will impact his view, it will be packaged in a box so the reflection isn’t a concern. I meant the sides of the box could partially block the side/back windows and therefore impact the driver’s view of the road depending on how it’s placed.

@runoutofnamechanges @PleasePassTheCoffeeThanks thank you both, I didn’t know that!

@ooooohbetty I just use Uber as a general term for taxi, my local cab service quoted me £20 for a 7 seater. Uber XL is slightly cheaper but I’ll probably go with local cab as they will already be aware of the mirror so I won’t have to deal with catching an Uber driver off guard!

@Lhastingsmua ok. I'll let you off Smile but even calling taxis 'ubers' is giving them publicity. Good luck getting your stuff home.
