To ask about my toddlers injury? Pic attached

Posting for traffic. My GP surgery’s phone line isn’t ringing ( not unusual) and my just turned 2 year old has split his toe nail. I’m not sure if he did it yesterday at nursery or this morning with DP. It doesn’t seem to be causing him a lot of pain but he’s trying to pick at the nail and i’m not sure if I should take him to get seen or wether it’s a case of leaving it? Anyone experienced this before? I was going to take him the the walk in centre if the doctors don’t turn the phone on, is that a PFB over reaction?

If you have any cuticle nippers I would nip it off if it’s not bothering him.

One of my sons had similar and that’s what I did. It grew out fine, no damage to the nail bed. He was a bit older and convinced it would hurt but of course it didn’t!

fudgecat · 11/10/2019 14:05

I'm sure it will be fine, if it was your toe you wouldn't go to the doctor's would you?

TerribleCustomerCervix · 11/10/2019 14:06

Dd had something similar (but no blood) when she was about 13 months.

I just snipped it so she couldn’t tug at it and it wouldn’t catch on her socks. Nail has grown in normally since and that was a year ago.

YouJustDoYou · 11/10/2019 14:08

Mine have had that a couple of times, as long as there's no infection gone into the foot itself you can cut that sucker off and just cover it whilst it scabs over.

PFB Grin thanks

It'd just put some antiseptic cream on it and cover! It will heal.

Drogosnextwife · 11/10/2019 15:08

I would try and snip it off and stick some savlon cream on it and maybe a plaster to protect it from socks rubbing for a while.

BooseysMom · 11/10/2019 15:12

Ooh your poor DC. No need to see gp unless it starts looking infected. It's dirty so bathe in warm water, clip off nail and apply good old Savlon. A nice long soak in the bath will do wonders

picklemepopcorn · 11/10/2019 15:14

I'd use a plaster to protect it from little fingers.

Harriett123 · 11/10/2019 18:52

I agree with others little or nothing a doctor can do.
Give it a wipe with some disinfectant wipes clip away torn bits and just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesnt get infected. He will be fine. My big toe nail ripped off on a large heavy door last year it grew back fine.

Emalmostfamous8 · 11/10/2019 19:18

If it looks worse, red, swollen, or anything like that might be an idea to pop to the chemist.

waggydog21 · 11/10/2019 19:21

Soak it in a warm salt water bath, it’s brilliant. Cut the nail off if you can but I’d put a plaster on incase it snags anything

Popper456 · 11/10/2019 19:40

If u get to wash n clip it put some vaselin n cover with plaster and or sock, it will stop any snagging and help the stuck nail come away without any pain. Plus it'll keep it moist and stop it drying n breaking.

MitziK · 11/10/2019 19:49

Soak in warm saline, nip off the edge, cover with a dressing, tape/fabristrip and replace daily. If it starts going greeny yellow or DC is uncomfortable walking, step up the soaking and see the GP, as it might need antibiotic cream.

The saline (warm, previously boiled water with salt added) will deal with any infection, nipping the end of it off makes it less likely to catch, the dressing makes DC less likely to mess around with it or for infection to take hold/make it stick to the sock and provides some cushioning.

Basil90 · 11/10/2019 19:55

What would you expect a dr to do? Confused

Sweetpeach3 · 11/10/2019 20:11

Just put a plaster over it an keep it clean and try to cut it down. Both my dc have done this their so leithal when it comes to opening doors on their feet... really annoys me haha!!
dC will be fine x

MissPepper8 · 11/10/2019 20:19

My 2 year old did exactly the same a week ago or so. He keeps stubbing it as he's a nutter on our patio door. The cut scabbed up and he split the nail a bit.

I trimmed the nail when the scab fell off and its fine now. Echoing what others are saying though, I watched it and the sign of redness or infection I was taking him to gp.

JenniferM1989 · 11/10/2019 22:14

Give it clean and put a plaster on it

TriciaH87 · 11/10/2019 22:29

Cream plaster and socks. Try cutit down first if possible. If not let it grow a bit first. Nothing else docs can do without removing whole nail and that will cause pain(I remember having to remove a finger nail at 18 because of a work injury) once it grows should be easy to trim.

MatildaTheCat · 11/10/2019 22:38

Watch it carefully. My DS did something similar and it became infected. I had to make an emergency doctors appointment and I so clearly remember him rolling his eyes to the receptionist about the emergency toe.

When he saw it, (it had a clear red mark creeping up his little foot) he swallowed hard, prescribed antibiotics and insisted that we returned in a couple of days for him to check it.
