Super quick reception lunchbox help please?!

DS gets free school dinners this year but has been begging me for a lunchbox as he's seen some of the older kids have it.

Now I've made one this morning I don't think there's enough food in it.

We have

  • one slice of bread made into a cream cheese sandwich.
  • cucumber and pepper slices in a container
  • 4 cherry tomatoes
  • some blueberries

I was thinking of some quavers too but not sure if that's just feeding him rubbish.
They're not allowed any nuts or any sweet stuff like chocolate bars etc.

He's 4 and generally takes his time with food but has started eating a lot better since starting reception.

Should I be putting more in?
I also have some sausages I could cut up for him and pop in there but then I don't know if he'll have it all.

For packed lunch I always do a sandwich or similar, some salad veg, fruit, a treat (yogurt tube, crisps, raisins, bear yoyo, cereal bar etc) and a juice or smoothie.

Luckily our school don't have the lunch box police so I can put in what I know is a balanced diet for my children.

@HeyNotInMyName - We put in Frube yogurts, which come in a tube that you rip the top of (easy for a child to do, but a MTA will always help if need be) as there's no need to include a spoon and the empty tube just goes in the bin, or if no bin is available, it doesn't make a huge mess inside the lunchbox.

@letsjog - My youngest DD is 10 now, but has had the same things in her packed lunch since Year 3 - although portion sizes have increased. School have always been happy with the contents of her lunchbox and it fills her up enough to fuel her through the school day:

Handful of grapes for mid-morning snack
Grated cheese sandwich
Frube yogurt
Handful of grapes/small apple/satsuma/pot of fresh strawberries
Jammie Dodger biscuit

I think, with the sausage you've added, your DS's packed lunch sounds just right. You'll just need to employ a little trial and error to get the amounts right and perhaps include a little more on days when he has PE or later when he starts swimming with school.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Just thought I'd update how he did. He had his sandwich and all of the vegetables.
Nothing else.
He snacked on the blueberries and raisins I popped in there on the way home with DP.
Didn't have the sausage at all.
I'll keep the amount the same next time he has a packed lunch to see how he gets on.

He always has a proper meal at home so I'm not too worried and I know he always has the option of the school lunch for now so I think he's fine.
