Sequins on clothing

AIBU to think that the current trend for sequins on clothes seems to be at odds with the message that we need to reduce the use of plastic?
Every shop and website that I look at has several tops for both boys and girls with large numbers of sequins attached. It seems incredibly wasteful.

Yanbu. I completely agree and would even if they actually looked nice. Which they don’t, and, after a couple of washes I suspect sequins would be kissing and look more shit than before.

Missing !!! Not kissing !! Bloody hell auto correct

And those tops with two-way sequins that brush upwards or downwards to make two different images are an invitation to all and sundry to get close and handsy with children.

Who buys them and puts their child in the position of having to deal with unwanted touching?

Good point, granny

Who the hell touches random children? I (a grown adult - ready for your judgement) have a top like that and I never dreamed that anyone would try to brush my sequins. They would be in serious trouble if they did!

Most fabric has so much plastic (polyester) that that sequins are the least of your worries though.

I buy the odd one for my daughter as she loves them. She has never had an issue with other people touching them. I think there are worse clothes that you can buy for girls eg slogans saying 'pretty', 'love' or mini version of adults stuff like bikinis.

Saying that, I never really thought of the environmental angle so will try and be more conscious of this in the future

YANBU - are they not a nightmare to wash?

Plasticsequins · 10/10/2019 13:54

I don't buy polyester clothing, so it's pretty easy to avoid plastic in my clothes. Sequins are quite often attached to 100% cotton tops though, adding plastic where it's completely unnecessary.
It's becoming a bigger trend rather than dying out, which is a shame when shops are making an effort to reduce plastic.

I raised this before and was called a fun sponge.

It’s a good point though, why spend a lot of time and energy reducing the plastic you use for packaging then wrap yourself in a load of unnecessary plastic.

I was also surprised to read recently that a gentle wash releases more microplastics than a vigorous one.

MIL bought a couple of these, at DDs request. (I don't like sequins at all so wouldn't have been talked in to it)

Dd wore one to nursery and the first thing she said to me when I picked her up was that she was upset with people messing about with her top.
