To take time off work with morning sickness?

I am due to go back to work after a year's maternity leave. However I am also 10 weeks pregnant and really wiped out with nausea all the time. On my worst days I am probably sick 30 times in a day. I am exhausted and feel awful. My job is quite physical and around food and I just don't feel like I can do it. Would I be unreasonable to delay my return for a couple of weeks until it hopefully dies down? Last pregnancy it wore off at about 12 weeks but it also wasn't this bad. I can't shake the feeling that I just need to suck it up/ all women go through this etc etc.

Not all pregnant women are sick 30 times a day! That sounds awful! Delaying your return seems like the most disruptive idea for everyone.

I think you need to see a GP if you are vomiting that much. I have been unwell, not pregnancy related and throwing up around twenty times a day and was admitted for anti sickness medication.

ArfArfBarf · 10/10/2019 13:04

My GP signed me off for two weeks when I had morning sickness that bad. There’s also a lot of safe medication they can offer (although the really effective stuff is expensive so you might have to try the less effective stuff first).

Pinkypurple35 · 10/10/2019 13:05

It doesn’t sound feasible to go back to work around food if you’re being sick that much.

ThreeLittleDots · 10/10/2019 13:08

If you're feeling so poorly that you're unable to keep anything down then you need to be in hospital on IV fluids and anti-sickness drugs, not at work Flowers

FortheloveofJames · 10/10/2019 13:09

It’s not ideal since your just due to return but what can you do? Health and baby comes first. Best to delay your return instead of trying to go in, having to come home etc numerous times. You could very easily get a doctors sick note for it anyway.

With that amount of vomiting it sounds more like HG- which can be absolutely debilitating and horrendous so please make sure you speak to your midwife. Totally sympathise. I had bad sickness with DS1 but it did ware off about week 17. This pregnancy It was horrendous (had to be signed off) untill about week 26 and then even since then I still feel sick to my stomach most days and still have bouts of vomiting. Currently 3 days over due so clearly not going to stop feeling sick till she’s born now Envy

I've been off since 10 weeks and I'm 24 weeks now! So don't feel that all women 'work through it'. I 'only' had 2 weeks off with DS1 but this time round I can barely potter round my house let alone go to work.

Sunshineonleith12 · 10/10/2019 13:13

Oops just reread my message and realised I've put the exact opposite of what I actually meant! It should say
Delaying your return seems like the least disruptive idea for everyone.
Sorry! Not sure how I managed to get that one so wrong.

Confrontayshunme · 10/10/2019 13:22

Definitely head over to the hyperemesis board on antenatal as that sounds like you have it! Bless you, just stay home! If you are that sick, you won't be much use at work anyway, unless you really fancy sitting in the toilets all day!

Jollitwiglet · 10/10/2019 13:24

Not all women go through it, especially to that extent. You won't won't get any prizes for trying to battle through it. I agree with pp that you should probably get to your GP for some neds

Littlepeak34 · 10/10/2019 13:33

If I felt that bad, no I wouldn’t go to work. First DC I felt nauseous but never threw up and I went to work. But what you are going through sounds much more severe. I would see your GP and get sickness drugs and doctors note.

C1u4toff · 10/10/2019 13:58

That's defo sounds like HG. I was off work for 2 months I was so I'll in my second pregnancy and off about 3 weeks with my first. My advise is not to go to work and a visit to the GP
