Baby extremely cephalic 32 weeks

I’m having twins and the first twin is extremely cephalic I’m 32 weeks. The impatient side of me is wondering does this mean they could come soon. I know asvtwins they will anyway around 36/37 weeks but extremely cephalic won’t mesn the next week or so does it?

Who used the terminology “extremely cephalic” ?

ElizaPancakes · 09/10/2019 19:37

I don’t know what that means.

And twins don’t necessarily come early. Especially if there are no issues.

If you mean one is head down then this is normal, there’s two of them in there.

I had mine at 36 weeks induced due to pre-eclampsia. I get that pregnancy is the longest and shortest time of your life but don’t wish them to come early.

SoyDora · 09/10/2019 19:39

I didn’t know cephalic had extremes... surely they are either cephalic or they’re not?
Anyway all three of my singletons were head down from 30 weeks. One came at 40+6, one at 40+2 and one at 41+6!

Teddybear45 · 09/10/2019 19:39

Do you mean one twin has dropped? If so, no that doesn’t mean you will give birth imminently.

Jollitwiglet · 09/10/2019 19:40

What does extremely cephalic mean? Do you mean the head is right down? If so it's not necessarily an indication that labour will start anytime soon

The closer to 37 weeks they get the better for them, OP, unless there are complications that mean they have to come out earlier.

If what the person who spoke to you meant that Twin 1 is head-down and engaged, that doesn't mean they're on their way out - they can engage and disengage in the weeks up to birth.

Bugbeau · 09/10/2019 19:44

Have not had twins but my 2nd was fully engaged at 32 weeks and my midwife told me to have a hospital bag ready to go. She stayed fully engaged and my bump was very low but she didn’t arrive until 39 weeks.

Worriedpup88 · 09/10/2019 19:53

It was in my notes when I read them after the appointment when she was scanning she was very very low down to get the head

Far better that they stay in there for as close to term as possible, OP. I wouldn't be too impatient if I were you- be careful what you wish for and all that. I know a 32 weeker- 18 months now and doing really well but very delayed compared to her much younger friends born at term. They think she'll catch up eventually, but it's not the ideal.

NearlyGranny · 09/10/2019 20:06

Yeah, there's less room when there's two, so they assume odd positions sometimes! DD1 was head-down most of the way through while DS1 was transverse. We called them upstairs baby and downstairs baby.

At 35 weeks he turned breech and even later, 36 or 37 weeks? he turned again and they were both head down.

He shifted position twice after everyone was predicting a section because there was no room for anyone to move. It meant I didn't need a Csection. He actually pushed her off to one side and was born first.

It doesn't sound as if baby #1 has actually engaged, so don't worry about it being low. It doesn't mean they're imminent, just using all the space.

I know they call 36 weeks term for twins - or they did when I had mine - but it doesn't have to be. I got to 38+2. It meant they were both nice and big and easy to handle and I had them with me from the start.

If thry thought you were at risk of preterm labour op thryd have made it clear and discussed steroids etc.
What kind of twins are they? Have they spoken to you about delivery options etc yet?

inwood · 09/10/2019 20:34

What sort of twins?

reasonablesettlement · 09/10/2019 20:43

@inwood - I knew that there were 2 types of twin, but it seems there are more

ElizaPancakes · 09/10/2019 20:49

There’s identical and fraternal with variations about their gestation.

SleepingStandingUp · 09/10/2019 21:09

Tbf I think beyond identical (how many placenta /how many sacs) and non identical the other types are so rare as to hardly ever be heard of.
