Turkey and Syria

Turkish air force have gone in, and the Kurds have requested a no fly zone (from remaining US forces) to protect civilian areas - this has not been granted. There is public panic - of course.

Trump will have the blood on his hands first, soon to be followed by those of the West who do not support the Kurds - who had to do the dirty work against ISIS and have already suffered greatly.

AIBU to ask if this is the first step to WW3?

I’m honestly completely confused. Why do American troops need to be stationed in another country permanently? Feel like I’ve been living under a rock but surely they would of had to leave at some point.

SkaraBrae · 14/10/2019 18:57

They are happy to stay stationed in foreign countries for as long as it suits their interests.
They've just sent another 1000 troops to Poland- no war there.

Fact is they abandoned their allies to Turkey and IS.

Wherecanwegetoff123 · 14/10/2019 19:23

My husbands family are Turkish/Kurdish and live in a small village as close as you can get to the Syrian border on the Turkish side. The other day a bomb was sent over "by mistake" apparently. 3 people were killed. 2 were from our family. This will get worse. The rest of the village has evacuated. However it won't be long and there will be a full on war between Syria and turkey.

Wherecanwegetoff123 · 14/10/2019 19:25

I forgot to add the bomb was from the Turkish military but sending it in the opposite direction. Can't see it being an accident really

GoodwithRocksandGems · 14/10/2019 19:29

It’s awful and upsetting. Some of the stories I’ve seen have been horrendous.

Been thinking about it all day. Channel 4 news just lead with the story.

And we should all be very worried about any isis resurgence.

Wherecanwegetoff123 · 14/10/2019 19:41

There's a video of my father in law on the Turkish news shouting saying why are you doing this to all these poor people. They have now evacuated and left their homes

Wherecanwegetoff123 · 14/10/2019 19:42

Just before this another one was sent over and a young boy lost his leg. A few other homes were heavily affected too

Wherecanwegetoff123 · 14/10/2019 19:51

I believe ww3 has started and it will end badly

Wherecanwegetoff123

I am so sorry. If you and your family feel able, please do share the awfulness with anyone who will listen, we cannot allow Trump and the media to cover this up. Trump has chosen a terrible time to withdraw, with no respect for their Allies or how this affects the world.

Nanalisa60 · 14/10/2019 20:48

Im just heartbroken for the Kurds!! They have been so brave in the last few years fighting on the ground against ISAS and now the bloody world turns there backs on them and that twat sits in his Oval Office talking out of his arse!!

It’s a bloody disgrace

I really love turkey and the people and have gone there each year for the last five years but I will not be going again until they go back across there own boarder.

It’s all such a mess!!

So we are all sitting worried about how we will live without Avacados and French Brie after bloody BREXIT just think what those poor kurds are going though!!

I just want to cry !!

Wherecanwegetoff123 · 14/10/2019 20:50

I would share the video. But our family would be targeted more.

Wherecanwegetoff123 · 14/10/2019 20:57

There's a crackdown on politics and it is known anyone opposed to ErdoÄŸan is at risk of imprisonment. As we are here and not in turkey they would probably arrest my in-laws or their other family members if we post something. It really isn't that simple

FieldsOfLavender · 14/10/2019 21:01

Thank you for the link above to the explanation.

I had also heard the US troops were not happy about withdrawing.

Such a horrible situation. :(

Wherecanwegetoff123 · 14/10/2019 21:02

ErdoÄŸan is a tyrant and is as bad as Hitler. There will be an attempt of a genocide of the Kurds. My DH pointed out that it looks like ErdoÄŸan s plan is to drive the kurds into Syria causing Syria to react. There will then probably be a bad war

Nanalisa60 · 14/10/2019 21:04

Erdogan is a very dangerous man!!

No free speech in Turkey anymore

We really don’t know how lucky we are in this country!!

People can just disappear in Turkey for there political views!!

Wherecanwegetoff123 · 14/10/2019 21:05

Yes we no of about 20

Wherecanwegetoff123 · 14/10/2019 21:06

Social media is nice but can also be a curse

Wherecanwegetoff123 · 14/10/2019 21:12

We had planned to return to the village for our retirement in the future but our village probably won't be around then. I hope this is not true but what we have accepted

hoteltango · 14/10/2019 21:35

Trump is not just inept, he's criminally inept.

I'm so sorry your family is suffering, where.

Wherecanwegetoff123 · 14/10/2019 21:37

Thank you everyone. They are safe for now. And have moved to other family in a city an hour away but it won't be safe for long. Other members went to the neighbouring village to grieve for the dead. My in-laws left after the funeral. Unfortuanly they can't come and stay here for a while as their passports expired and I really don't think they will be issuing visas and passports to Kurds right now!

yolofish · 14/10/2019 22:39

where I am so so sorry. Your poor family, and all the other families there too. Flowers

hi @Wherecanwegetoff123 I'm saddened to read about how this tragedy has affected your dear family Flowers

I have family who are due to visit Tunceli for a few days, flying out to Turkey this weekend. I guess it's unlikely they'll be directly affected by the conflict but I wish they weren't going, even so. Feels like things could worsen quickly with the woeful lack of foresight and diplomacy from the US and ErdoÄŸan's bloodlust Angry

Notthebloodymustardcushion · 15/10/2019 11:19

I agree OP, and agree with Peninsula.

The situation in Syria has caused a slow burn WW3 for several years now, and we are seeing it ramp up dangerously and unsurprisingly after Trumps disasterous decision.

Nato Member Turkey advancing from the north.

Assad advancing from the South, with Russia on their side.

Kurds in the middle, some of whom are now doing protection (survival) deals with Assad, which will inevitably lead to separatist factions who will refuse such deals at any cost.

American abandonment of the Kurds, and also precariously secured Nuclear weapons stationed at Incerlik.

Isis terrorists escaping.

The UN on the verge of bankruptcy.

Millions of displaced refugees.

What could possibly go wrong?
