To be creeped out by this even though I'm non woo

So it's come to light that when I was a young child my mother (completely non woo, or so I thought) had a priest preform an exorcism in my bedroom when I was a child.

She says she saw shadows over my cot when I was crying and felt a presence. I'd stop crying when she entered and the 'shadow' would disappear.

She said one night she went in and she just knew this 'thing' was evil and had to call my dad to leave work early (on night shift) which he's confirmed did happen.

They then got an actual priest over to exorcise my bedroom and, in her words, throw water about.

Apparently afterwards I slept fine and had no more night terrors.

AIBU to be a bit creeped out by this? I'm not really into woo stuff but honestly I don't believe she's lying, she isn't the sort and my dad confirmed it too. Neither of them have ever given me any impression that they even believe in this sort of stuff!

Random AIBU I know but I'm just a bit wtf about this new information!

Have you seen The Babadook op?

Sleep deprivation I'd say.

When upset, my mum would literally give you an electric shock if she grabbed you, blue flash and all.

Our neutrons fire on electricity, and electricity conducts. It's not inconceivable that some remnant of energy may remain if a brain is distressed enough. Every time you watch a Marilyn Monroe film you're seeing a ghost.

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 09/10/2019 21:13

I think it was likely your mum had extreme sleep deprivation or pnd. I wouldn’t feel woo about it.

TooManyPaws · 09/10/2019 21:18

From the Methodist Church, we would go and listen and pray, and if that doesn’t work, we ring the Anglicans.

I remember reading an article and an imam said that they pass anyone in their mosque straight to the Anglicans to deal with the djinns! 😁

carlywurly · 09/10/2019 21:43

I pass as a relatively sane professional in rl, as do my family, but we have so many stories about this kind of thing. Mn is not generally a place I share them.

When I'm very stressed I can break or trip electrical things by being near them. I can also affect nearby lights. Yes I do know how mad that sounds but it's happened for years. Grin

Ullupullu · 09/10/2019 21:51

What are you creeped out by, OP?

Have you spoken to your parents about your mother's postnatal depression?

Sashkin · 09/10/2019 22:03

From the Methodist Church, we would go and listen and pray, and if that doesn’t work, we ring the Anglicans

I feel like this is advice to live by! (Non-snark, I really do feel there aren’t many problems that can’t be solved by that approach)

Aroundnabout1 · 09/10/2019 22:06

What's even more disturbing than the OP is people using the word woo. Wtf.

Andysbestadventure · 09/10/2019 22:12

My little boy wont sit at one end of the dining table. He's two. He points to the hallway and under the stairs which is just an empty space with a shoe rack, and you can see it from the dining room door. We moved in several months ago and recently found out the old man that lived here previously was found dead in the hallway 🙈

It's not evil, whatever or whoever it is. I say hello every now and then when the air changes in the room just incase woo is real 😬

No more bonkers than talking to god I reckon 😂

Jiggles101 · 10/10/2019 00:19

Sleep what did you mean about Marilyn Monroe and watching a ghost? Sorry if am being slow!

yearinyearout · 10/10/2019 07:32

I suspect it was a shadow cast by your mum opening the door to your bedroom and letting some light in from the landing 😂

RuffleCrow · 10/10/2019 07:33

It was probably undiagnosed pnd or anxiety. The priest may have been a placebo. If it helps it helps.

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 10/10/2019 07:44

Just that you are watching a recording of a light pattern on a layer of material that has recorded Marilyn's image @jiggles101. The moment has passed but is still visible.

So, when people describe seeing ghosts, I wonder if what they're seeing is a captured vision created by the person's energy.

Biggie123 · 10/10/2019 07:48

You were little and your mum was probably sleep deprived. She probably isn’t woo but like most new mums would do anything to protect their child.
Just a another (albeit interesting) way she took care of you...

HerculePoirotsGreyCells · 10/10/2019 07:56

It wouldn't have been an exorcism, the house would have been blessed. I know this because my childhood home was.

Hagbeth · 10/10/2019 08:06

I’m I the only one that haven’t got a clue what “woo” is? Hmm

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 10/10/2019 08:14

My Mum's the same @curlywurly. She can't wear a watch, digital or otherwise, they just stop working.

Her phone's a nightmare too...but that may be her age and a touch of technophobia!

HumptyDumptyHadAGreatFall · 10/10/2019 08:16

I don't get why you were creeped out. My childhood home was haunted, some things would randomly fly off the mantelpiece, rocking horse used to rock by itself in the middle of the night. Both me and my sister used to see the same old man in the garden. (We later found out an old man died in the house and was a keen gardener before we lived there). Lots of people have paranormal experiences. You only don't believe it because you haven't experienced it.

She was just trying to protect you, what do you find creepy?

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 10/10/2019 08:17

Woo is the sound ghosts make @Hagbeth.

So something can be a bit "wooOooOoo" .

FilledSoda · 10/10/2019 13:21

I think Yabu a bit, can you not be comforted by this instead of ' creeped out' ?
How has this come up now all these years later?

managedmis · 10/10/2019 13:24

Other denominations vary. From the Methodist Church, we would go and listen and pray, and if that doesn’t work, we ring the Anglicans.

^^

Faecetious or not? I was wondering too..

carlywurly · 11/10/2019 20:49

@SleepOhHowIMissYou yes I've had the watch thing too.

On one occasion I was holding out my wrist and comparing my watch with a friend who has a very similar watch. Both of them then immediately stopped. Cost me £50. Angry

pallisers · 11/10/2019 21:20

I suspect this was a manifestation of your mother's anxiety or possible pnd and the vicar knew it but thought it mightn't do any harm to say a few prayers and make her feel better.
