My oven and hob have both just died completely and I have no idea what to make for dinner. Any ideas are much appreciated, I have a hungry 2 year old waiting for her tea! TIA!

The only decent microwave option is beans on toast

Please say you have a working toaster...?!

FizzyIce · 08/10/2019 17:57

@WarshipWarrior
The skins are rank either way, I never eat them.
Plus microwaving them saves about 50 mins!

Cheesy beans on toast.

MrHaroldFry · 08/10/2019 18:02

250g basmati rice
400g special mixed frozen vegetables
a generous handful of raisins
1 vegetable stock cube
2 tbsp korma curry paste
a generous handful of roasted salted cashew

Boil the kettle. Get out a large microwaveable bowl and pile in the rice, veg and raisins.

Pour 600ml/1 pint boiling water over the rice mixture and crumble in the stock cube, then stir in the curry paste.

Cover the bowl with cling film, leaving a small gap at the side to let out the steam.
Cook on full power (850 watts) for 12 minutes – if your microwave is less powerful, add 2 minutes.

Remove from the microwave and stand, still covered, for 5 minutes to complete the cooking – if you don’t let it stand the rice will be too nutty.
Fluff up the rice, scatter with cashews and serve.

But @WarshipWarrior the.op.Has no.oven hence people suggesting microwavable Jacket potatoes, !And tbh it's a question of taste ,I quite like Jackets in the microwave I certainly don't prefer oven jackets enough to wait for an hour or two!

Well today was the day I found out you can cook pasta in the microwave 😂 having some pasta with some frozen veg and tomato sauce. Thank you all for the suggestions! We will definitely be using some of these until the landlord fixes the issues (oven and hob are freestanding so the whole thing died, unfortunately not a fuse issue)

Jacket = 10 mins in microwave then 20 mins in a hot oven. The same as being in the microwave I.e cooked quickly but a nice crispy skin. Also the skin is the best bit. You're all heathens if you think otherwise.

Scoobygang7 · 08/10/2019 19:06

Could be a fuse in the plug to the oven as free standing now aren't usually wired in to box. Have you tried moving to another socket it could be a socket issue?

@WarshipWarrier I'm sure the OP would appreciate your advice if she had an oven to follow it.

How do you cook pasta in the microwave?!
I always do my rice in the microwave thoug, and cous cous just needs boiling water poured over it and covered.

WarshipWarrior · 09/10/2019 20:59

My advice was to get a takeaway. I was just drawn into the jacket pot debate
