Alendronic acid infusion or tablets?

I have a horrible decision to make.

I’ve been told that due to very low bone density I have to choose between 3 years of weekly Alendronic Acid tablets, which make me feel ill, nauseaous, achey and generally quite unwell. They will also damage my teeth (and possibly cause them all to fall out).
OR a once a year Alendronic infusion, which will make me feel much, much worse and once it’s in, I just have to deal with the side effects as they can’t reverse it and they can’t tell me just how bad it will be.

I just don’t know what to do! So AIBU to ask if any of you have taken the infusion and how bad it was?

What would you do if you were me?

I think the infusions is called Zoledronic acid.

Has the Denosumab injection been mentioned to you- I know someone that has been moved onto it from the weekly alendronic tablet due to its side effects.

Thanks for the reply.

No, that wasn’t mentioned. I’ve been taking the Alendronic tablets for a few months and had my review today and only the yearly infusion or weekly tablets were discussed.

I’ll google Denosumab, thank you.

My relative had to stop the tablets due to the side effects on her teeth. No issues with the injection so far- it's one every 6months with regular bloods to check calcium levels.

Don't forget that you also have the option to decline both. If you mention that you are thinking of doing that you might find that alternatives are suddenly made available...

I’ve also been reading up online and I’m going to ask for the infusion I think. The side effects only seem to let a week - 14 days and at the moment I’m suffering for 3/4 days a week.

I’ve looked at the Denosumab, but that would mean injections more often and I’m not a fan of needles.

I am going to make a follow up appointment to discuss other options too. Thanks.

Alendronic acid tablets have no effect on the teeth and will not cause them to fall out.
The risk is osteoporosis necrosis of the jaw bone. The risk is higher with injections rather than the tablets

@RobinHumphries I’ve been taking them for a few months and my gums are already quite pitted and ulcerated and this was the concern with my teeth falling out. My gums are deteriorating quite badly.

I’ve not had jawbone necrosis mentioned, it sounds even worse than my teeth worries.

What would you do?
