AIBU to ask anyone considering buying a designer cross-breed puppy to follow this animal shelter for a few weeks before going ahead?

I have had a couple of poodle crosses and am fully aware of how delightful they are. I am not anti any kind of dog for "purist" or any other reason.

We are considering getting a new dog sometime in the next few years and I've been all over the internet looking at people selling cavapoos, poochons, and various forms of doodle puppies.

I found the website of an incredible looking rehoming charity called Many Tears and have been following them for about a month. Looking at all their dogs and checking every day for new and updated dogs.

AIBU unreasonable to challenge, in fact, implore, anyone who like me has been looking at getting a designer puppy to do the same.

This charity mainly rehomes dogs discarded from the puppy industry. That is, puppies that don't make the cut of being able to be sold for hundreds of pounds because of a health problem. Breeding females who have had too many litters to be of any further use and are petrified of people. Dogs that have clearly been returned to breeders for whatever reason, or for some reason are unsold.

Really looking into the profiles of these little dogs just reveals how incredibly heartless this industry is, and how many people must be being taken for a ride every day by heartless breeders. I thought I was pretty savvy but have realised through studying the dogs on this website, that I wasn't.

@halulat, my love to your rescue. I don't get how anyone can be so cruel to animals.

The money involved in large scale breeding with no care taken of the animals is astronomical...

This is a huge and corrupt business.I live near an Irish puppy farm which is licenced to have almost 500 breeding bitches.
One of the Southern Irish puppy farms was found to have hundreds more breeding bitches than they should have. When they were asked to reduce the numbers they sold a large number of their older bitches to a rehoming charity.I'd recommend that people follow the Pups not Profit page on Facebook to get a clear idea of how puppy farms operate.

I'm in agreement with everything that has been said about the rescue process. They're so ridiculously strict, could we guarantee no under 5 visitors to our home ever? Erm no of course not.
We looked for 2 years for a suitable dog and in the end had a pup from dp's colleague whos family breeds one of their own working dogs (rarely) when they need a new dog to train up.

@99RedBalloonsFloating (love the name) I think the ones that can only be only dogs are the very nervous ones who need need quiet homes. We have small children so definitely not a quiet home!

No13 · 10/10/2019 07:57

Puppy farms might not exist if rescues weren’t so strict. It’s very difficult.

Puppy farms might not exist if rescues weren’t so strict.

Nothing to do with the vast amounts of money puppy farmers make then?

All the fault of rescues that the animals are treated with unimaginable cruelty?

What an absurd post.

Starbucks I honestly think some people have no idea what a puppy farm is! Or the ethos around Rescue Shelters.

"Well, the rescue won't let us have that very lovely, very nervous dog, that has been abused to within an inch if it's life, because we have 3 rowdy kids and the dog is likely to snap at them, or worse - BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN BADLY ABUSED and the rescue centre has assessed the poor dog as needing a quiet home with time to bond with its new, gentle, patient, adult, owners before they start some basic training with this 5 year old dog. Fuck 'em, we'll get a puppy from a puppy farm instead. If it nips the kids or shits all over the place or we get fed up with it we can always give it to a rescue to re-home or sell it on gumtree".
🤬😡🤬😡🤬

I have completely fallen in love with Hannah. I hope they all find a wonderful forever home.

I can't read anymore though... "she will cower when approached". The human race sickens me sometimes.

W0rriedMum · 10/10/2019 13:23

@Streamside that's very interesting.

Again, I am not speaking of MT whom I don't know at all, but not all rescue centres are as above board as others. The whole area should be regulated.

I would start with having people license their dogs and state where they got them - puppy breeder, rescue, friend etc.. The data obtained would soon point to the clusters of middle men or breeders who are exploiting dogs.

The real issue is that people buy dogs from places we "sort of" know aren't legitimate - dogs kept in outside premises, no questions asked about our circumstances (people in the home, working hours etc.). As long as the puppy looks cute, we close our eyes and hope for the best..

Yet another application for a puppy farm in Wales. Please sign and share.

Wales is the Capital of Puppy Farming because the kennels sheds are erected out in the wilds, so out of sight and sound of people.

This is the second proposal for a Puppy Farm in the last couple of months. Why are the Council even considering it! It's time to close them all. Not build more! 🤬

StarbucksSmarterSister · 10/10/2019 18:17

Twopups exactly

So many people don't seem to realise that the parents, especially the mothers who are bred from every season for years, are kept in disgusting conditions until they die.

And even registered farms can be vile.
