To think it’s going to be really hard to find a house to rent with a cat?

I’m privately renting and have lived here for 4 years. My tenancy said no pets, but soon after I moved in I asked if I could get a cat and the landlord agreed which was wonderful.

I’m now looking for a bigger property as my DC are outgrowing our tiny 2-bed, but every house I see on Rightmove says no pets. One perfect house came up and I decided to call the agent directly to see if it was a negotiable criteria and they said absolutely not.

I’d be happy to pay an extra deposit and pay for a deep clean or whatever they wanted when I move out... it’s the moving in that’s the problem.

Is it worth calling the agent of each house I see to double check if a cat can be considered? Has anyone got a success story of finding a cat-suitable rental property?

I rented with 2 cats. The agency wanted extra deposit. I was expecting then to withhold some as the little blighters had scratched the carpet but when I left the LL decided to redecorate and replace the carpets throughout so I got the lot back :)

Ring round. Even those who say no pets. Offer extra deposit. Good luck.

Just don't tell them

It’s really selfish if you don’t tell them as some people are suggesting. You could be jeapordising their lease if it’s a leasehold property. I would happily let to people with pets but my freeholder doesn’t allow it.

The suggestion to contact a bunch of estate agents with your requirements is a good one. You will often be the first to know before properties even go on right move etc - my estate agents showed several people round my flat before it was listed. Landlords can no longer ask for more than 5 weeks rent deposit but as long as a professional carpet clean/deep clean at the end of the tenancy is written into the contract, a reasonable landlord without these restrictions from their freeholder will hopefully consider letting your kitty stay!

You might get some good advice if you move this thread to "The litter tray"

Honestly just ask all of them.

I wouldn't let to someone with 3 big hairy dogs and 16 cats but if a nice family had one cat or a little or quiet dog I wouldn't mind.

I've seen far more damage done to houses by kids than animals (my own included)
