WIBU to ask the school to amend the spelling mistakes and grammar in a report that they are circulating about my daughter's needs?

I attended the Annual Review of my daughter's EHCP three weeks ago. The format was such that notes were written on blackboards as points were raised. There were numerous spelling mistakes and grammatical errors at the time but didn't comment because I appreciated that these could be as a result of feeling rushed and not wanting to miss anything.
This morning I received the report and whilst it is an appraisal of the meeting taken from the whiteboards, the spelling mistakes and grammatical errors remain and new ones have been added where new text has been added.
This report is to be distributed to the Local Authority, health professionals, Social Care. Some of the grammatical errors have changed the meaning of what was said which obviously I have to raise but is it petty of me to ask them to change carn't for can't, there for their, and whose for who's and remove the apostrophes from the plurals and put them in where they have been missed elsewhere?
It is littered with errors and I'd be embarrassed to send it out if I'm honest but is it wrong of me to raise the errors outside of those which change the meaning?

That's awful - definitely complain.

EggysMom · 08/10/2019 16:24

I'd send it back with a thorough list of corrections, and a polite note saying that it has obviously been sent out by mistake before being proofread.

BubblesBuddy · 08/10/2019 16:30

My guess would be that the HT never read it! Say the spelling should be corrected. I would be ashamed to send it out if I was the Head. It’s a serious document written, supposedly, by professionals. It lessens the impact of its riddled with spelling errors. So do get it corrected.

PanamaPattie · 08/10/2019 16:31

It would seem to me that the Head may have agreed the report but they clearly haven't read it. The Head should be embarrassed that this standard of report has been circulated.

hazeyjane · 08/10/2019 16:31

I would ask for it to be amended to correct all errors. An EHCP is a legal document, and should be presented as professionally as possible.

stupidboyman · 08/10/2019 16:38

I would raise them. People need to take more care. They have clearly rushed your daughters report if they haven't even bothered to run a spell check on it.

teatimedreamer · 08/10/2019 17:54

Definitely return it (is it electronic? I'd email back in writing and cc the head so he's suitably red faced when he realises he's either not read it or can't actually spell) appalling. I don't think you need to make a fuss necessarily, just say it's obviously a mistake and it hasn't actually been proof read yet. They will be mortified.

Earthandsky · 08/10/2019 17:55

I would definitely complain to the Head.

Earthandsky · 08/10/2019 17:56

(Former senco myself and parent of dc with sen.)

GreenyEye · 08/10/2019 18:02

I would totally.

One of our reports was the same and I corrected it, in red pen and sent it back with a note attached, telling the I wouldn't approve anything until the errors were amended.

All these pedants make me cringe so hard. Being a SPAG twat is nothing to be proud of. But if it changes the meaning then I think you do need to point it out.

teatimedreamer · 08/10/2019 18:22

@BuildBuildings spag twat??? Really?? Expecting basic literacy in a professional report for a legal document.....god help this country if that makes a SPAG twat.

TheCanterburyWhales · 08/10/2019 18:22

I am the first on here to pull up the SPaG twats who correct others' Mumsnet posts.
This is completely different- an official document written in a school by a teacher in a serious role

The misplaced punctuation marks is one thing, but the actual changing of meaning is very serious.

Phineyj · 08/10/2019 18:23

I think it's fine to hold schools to a higher standard than other people/organisations.

I wonder if the SENCO is dyslexic. I've met a few who've been drawn into the job through their own experiences. But if they are, they need a proof reader!

Phineyj · 08/10/2019 18:24

Higher standard of SPaG

hazeyjane · 08/10/2019 18:48

All these pedants make me cringe so hard.

Oh come on! I don't give a fuck about spag in pretty much any other circumstance, but this is an important document!

hiddenworlds · 08/10/2019 18:54

Did the school write it? Here it is the SEN service, we regularly have to correct them as a school before sending the draft back.

Hiredandsqueak · 08/10/2019 19:01

No it's come directly from the school, the LA will use this report to send out their letter following Annual Review. I know the school wrote it because the school did spell our surname correctly something the LA seem to struggle with and besides it came with an attached note on headed paper and signed by SENCo

@Buildbuildings had I been a SPAG twat I could have commented at the meeting but didn't because I recognise people make mistakes and expected that they would be corrected when the report came out. If there had only been a few spelling mistakes and wrongly placed apostrophes it would have grated but I wouldn't have raised it even if I did think it showed the school in a poor light.
But the fact remains that their grammatical errors mean that the meaning is very different to what was discussed and what is actual fact and so I have no option other than to raise these because this contribution will be added to a legal document that needs to be accurate.

Geez. I work as a writer and would HAVE to correct those, it would cause me physical pain to let them lie!!
