To think that I was being treated rudely when asked for identification?

Hi dear all.
Today I went to clean a flat in an apartment complex. Been going there for a few months now and today the concierge (who knows me and has given me the keys many times) asked me to present ID. When I ask why he said it was the norm and he needed to see my I'd and then said 'you'r the cleaner' he was so rude. Did he have the right to ask for identification?

If he’s handing over the keys, of course he has the right to ask for identification Confused

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 07/10/2019 20:40

He is employed to keep the building safe and secure. Potentially he should have been asking you the whole time. I don’t see anything wrong with him asking but if he was rude that’s annoying.

Nicknacky · 07/10/2019 20:41

What did he say that was rude?

Peony99 · 07/10/2019 20:41

I wouldn't be surprised that a concierge would ask for ID in those circs.

He probably sees hundreds of people a week so can't rely on remembering your face.

And perhaps there's just been a break-in or something in the flats so they've been asked to be careful.

Justajot · 07/10/2019 20:54

I've worked somewhere as a contactor where contractors were always required to show legal ID, every single day. It was weird being greeted with "Hello Justajot, please could I see your passport?" But if that's the rule they are meant to follow then it isn't unreasonable for them to actually do it. It was probably an oversight not doing it in the first place.

YABU from what you have put in your OP.

I mean, if he actually were rude, then that is not great and no-one ought to be rude to anyone else.
However, asking for ID is doing his job, not being rude.

Loads of people have to wear ID in their place of work at all times.

redexpat · 07/10/2019 21:00

I think a lot depends on the tone. Maybe he's had an arse kicking for letting people in and not checking their ID.

Littlechocola · 07/10/2019 21:02

Just doing his job

colourlessgreenidea · 07/10/2019 21:04

Did he have the right to ask for identification?

How can anyone on here know what the access/ID protocol for this particular building is? Confused

Igotthemheavyboobs · 07/10/2019 21:29

I have to have my ID on full display all the times.

PineappleLumps · 07/10/2019 21:34

yes he had the right lol it’s his job. I live in a block of flats with a concierge and there are serval blocks and new guy who I hadn’t seen before asked me id because I asked for my own flat keys. He was so apologetic I was thrilled he was so vigilant.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 07/10/2019 21:43

Igotthemheavyboobs

My eyes just mixed your username and message and read

I have to have my boobs on full display at all times

Ohyesiam · 07/10/2019 21:46

Tell us what he said that was rude

Cleverplayonwords · 07/10/2019 21:47

What did he say that was rude?

He's either been pulled up about not asking for ID before or they've changed policy after a security issue or something.

What's the problem with him asking for ID?

IamWaggingBrenda · 07/10/2019 21:50

Maybe there’s been a recent incident in the building, or he’s been caught not asking for ID.
