AIBU to be pissed off that the Joker movie will be lining the pockets of convicted paedophile Gary Glitter?

Just that.
I certainly won't be going to see it!
Surely they could've chosen a different song ffs!?!?

It’s hypocrisy.

This.

Chamomileteaplease · 08/10/2019 09:20

What did David Bowie do?

BigChocFrenzy · 08/10/2019 09:21

Hardly "lefty virtue-signalling" when the OP links to a Sun story Hmm

All the tabloids love this kind of story;
whipping up readers into an indignant frenzy is what brings in the profits

SinkGirl · 08/10/2019 09:26

I’m not talking about the Sun story but rather the frothing tweets on which it’s based.

I'm currently re-watching One Tree Hill and the song in question was just used in an episode at a sporting event. The season was first shown in 2006, round about the time Glitter was being convicted for what happened in Vietnam. I don't remember a huge uproar then.

I've seen Joker. In the context of the story, the time period it's set in and the scene itself, the song really works. And unless you're going to avoid all artistic output by anyone with a less than savoury past, then this 'moral outcry' really just smacks of hypocrisy. After all John Lennon was a wife beater. Jimmy Page, Mick Jagger, Steven Tyler, David Bowie, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, Anthony Kiedis, Marvin Gaye and Iggy Pop are all rumoured to have had relationships with underage girls. Look at Michael Jackson for heavens sake!

Ginnymweasley · 08/10/2019 20:11

There seems to be a lot of negative press surrounding this film and a lot of it seems like utter bollocks. To all the people that are now saying they won't see it because of this, I'm presuming you didn't see the latest fantastic beasts film? Or bohemian rapsody? You don't watch films or tv shows that use Bowie music etc. For some reason the Joker has become some sort of hated film by a group of people and they are enjoying whipping people into a frenzy about it.

Mysterian · 08/10/2019 20:43

I hope Gary Glitter gets money to live comfortably enough on to ensure we never have to hear from him ever again.

Afternoonteadelight · 08/10/2019 20:49

@DeadButDelicious
I'm currently re-watching One Tree Hill
Is this on tv somewhere?

DeadButDelicious · 08/10/2019 21:15

@Afternoonteadelight Amazon Prime!

Afternoonteadelight · 08/10/2019 21:22

@DeadButDelicious, thanks. Was quite excited there but I don’t have prime.

StealthPolarBear · 08/10/2019 21:30

What did Prince do

Caucho · 11/10/2019 18:12

Glitter has been convicted but Jonny Depp and Bowie is conjecture. This is why I serve my wrath on professional lefties line Meryl Streep who virtue signal about Trump and give Polanski a standing ovation. The convicted Polanski

Wavyheaded · 13/10/2019 23:27

I'm a bit late to this thread but I just watched Joker this weekend. I found this article:

www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/music/story/2019-10-11/joker-gary-glitter-rock-and-roll-part-2

For “Joker,” much of the criticism is centered on assumptions that Glitter was personally profiting from its use in the film, but Glitter sold away all his rights to the recording and publishing of “Rock and Roll Part 2,” co-written by the late Mike Leander, as well as his other songs more than two decades ago, according to Snapper Music, the London-based label that now owns Glitter’s master recordings.

Still wish they hadn't used it though.

Amazing film it was.

Cautionsharpblade · 13/10/2019 23:31

Make sure you never shop at Greggs either

AutumnRose1 · 13/10/2019 23:32

Another poster wondering what Prince did...

DorisTheFlorist · 13/10/2019 23:36

I assume all those saying they won't go and see it never listen to Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Beatles or The Rolling Stones

BlackForestCake · 13/10/2019 23:44

Isn't he still in jail? The money's not going to be much use to him there.
