To not use my dining table?

JorisBonson · 07/10/2019 11:16

It's just DP and I in the house. Realised last night that I think we've only used our dining table about 5 or 6 times in the 2 years we've lived together. One was Christmas and once was playing cards.

Are we terribly slovenly to eat our dinner on the sofa?

It took me years to persuade DH to get rid of our dining table and turn the room into a proper home office/study instead. It's so much nicer and more practical now. We eat in the kitchen.

CrisisCrunchie · 07/10/2019 12:23

I don’t use mine much.. DC are past the worst of the messy stage which helps. However, it’s mainly because my dining room is the only room in my house that is exactly the way I want it to be & I love to keep it looking clean and perfect (especially as it has a window at the front of my house which everyone coming to the front door walks past

QuantamBaby · 07/10/2019 12:23

Do you only eat stuff you don't have to cut up then? Or do you have lap trays so you can balance and cut food?

We use the table every night for dinner except Saturdays when it's pizza and movies together on the sofa. It's a time to chat about our days and concentrate on each other without the blare of a tv. We also have primary school aged children and I think teaching them the value of taking time to talk and proper table manners is important - you can't do that on a sofa in front of the tv...

shearwater · 07/10/2019 12:23

At a table, by the way. We can seat ten at Christmas, with an additional little table, and it's so much cosier and lighter in the kitchen. The other table became superfluous.

WillowintheUK · 07/10/2019 12:28

So many people who don’t seem to enjoy sitting down at a table with the family for dinner - could this be one of the reasons so many young children don’t know how to behave at a table when eating out?

LonginesPrime · 07/10/2019 12:29

We don't eat at the dining table unless people come round, but it's invaluable for crafting, games, jigsaws, studying, etc. Its not fancy, just a chunky old wooden table.

Passthecherrycoke · 07/10/2019 12:29

Lots of Young children have never known how to behave at the table eating out. I can’t recall a magical time when everyone sat at the table either. It’s 2016, people have been eating in front of the TV for a long time

notso · 07/10/2019 12:34

Never mind young children not knowing how to behave I've seen loads of adults sitting in restaurants etc with their feet up on seats etc.

dottiedodah · 07/10/2019 12:34

Icantthinkofanwename87 I agree totally .We always had to sit at the table when I was a child.Much more relaxed watching Eggheads /News with DH and DC,gives talking points and a nice stress free time !

Passthecherrycoke · 07/10/2019 12:34

Its 2019 even Grin typo and 3 extra years TV dinner experience 🤣

StormcloakNord · 07/10/2019 12:39

I'm another one for eating at the dining table. I don't particularly like eating at the sofa as it's nice to face each other and yap before DD goes upstairs to game and DH and I watch TV!

Different strokes and all that though, when we were in a smaller house we all ate on the sofa simple as we didn't have a dining table!

tangled2 · 07/10/2019 12:43

Its really not that hard to use a knife and fork and eat on a sofa, I'm not sure what the problem would be. You don't need a tray.

Pre baby we used to eat on the sofa and watch an episode of a series together. Now we eat at the table as the baby makes a right bloody mess, plus i guess we're meant to show her how to sit at a table. I prefer the sofa though!

user1497787065 · 07/10/2019 12:46

Where do you eat if not at a table? I can't imagine even eating a sandwich sitting on a sofa.

Kahlua4me · 07/10/2019 12:46

We eat all meals at the table, together except pizza and film nights. I would much rather sit there as a family, eating and chatting as it encourages eye contact and proper interaction without tv to distract us.

We also use it for homework, sewing, crafts and VAT returns.

Anothernotherone · 07/10/2019 12:55

I wouldn't uses dining table in a dining room and would really dislike having one in a living room, but we have a big kitchen table and it's used for breakfast and dinner every day. If we eat lunch together that's usually but not always at the kitchen table.

Skittlesandbeer · 07/10/2019 13:09

Use it for kinky sex, and work your way up to meals? (after a good wipe-down).

ElizaDee · 07/10/2019 13:09

We eat at the table. We don't eat much on the sofas anymore at all. We sit at the table a lot in the day, and sofas in the evening when watching TV.

Rainbowknickers · 07/10/2019 13:12

We only use ours when my in laws come to stay
It’s normally home to piles of clothes, shopping bags, work uniform, bits of crap and a fruit bowl
I can’t get rid as it’s in the dining room!

WillowintheUK · 07/10/2019 13:25

@notso - never seen that. We must go to different types of places. Smile

Minioooons · 07/10/2019 13:25

We have a 10seater and it feels lonely just the 3 of us sitting on one end.
just use it for big occassions.
We have a kitchen island which we use sometimes but mostly just eat in front of the television.

Teddybear45 · 07/10/2019 13:27

I have a 6 seater table and insisted on using it for all meals even before the kids came (only snacks in front of the TV).

Ginfordinner · 07/10/2019 13:27

I hate eating cramped up over a plate on my knee. I always eat at a table as it is more comfortable, and I needn't worry about spilling food on the furniture.

We eat at the table every night. Spent many happy hours arguing politics with the teens sat around the table. Eating together is a social activity in our house, you don’t get that by eating on the sofa watching tv.

OpportunityKnocks · 07/10/2019 13:36

We have a dining table in the middle of the kitchen and eat all of our meals with the children there.
If they are in bed we eat in front of the tv in silence because we are simply exhausted by the aforementioned children 😁
