AIBU to think my VW Polo will be big enough when the twins arrive?

As the title says really... we have only recently got a lovely VW Polo and then realised we were expecting twins Blush

Money is going to be very tight so we are reluctant to replace it. Is there any way we will manage once the babies are here?

Depends how tall you both are and leg length. DH has to compromise his driving position in our legacy estate to get DS's baby seat in behind him - we would not manage 2 RF in a smaller car (and I'm not in a hurry to FF kicky fidgety 4yo...) He's only 6'1 but needs most seats all the way back. I'd be fine in a small car as I'm usually about 2 clicks from the closest position!

Waterdropsdown · 07/10/2019 13:06

Echo the comments about the rear facing car seats. Be really careful which ones you buy and try them out with the isofix base because some bases/seats may allow for extra room. For us (and we have a bigger car than you) it has become a bigger problem with the next stage rear facing car seat (you may be able to get forward facing by that time although it is not as safe for young children to travel forward facing).

Congratulations!

I remember once taking both DC to the supermarket in my Fabia, doing a huge shop, then opening the boot and realising it contained the double buggy. The whole shop fitted round buggy, baby and toddler.

It's all about attitude. If you are happy to fit buggy to car and use footwells or remove parcel shelf sometimes, then you'll get on fine. I find a small car fab with carseats as there is more space between your car and the next one. I hardly ever bothered with parent and child spaces. However if you are less keen on your small car, you will find plenty of reasons why it's fiddly and not working.

Our double buggy fitted fine in the fabia boot without removing the parcel shelf. The whole thing folded in half. I think it was an out'n'about nippa, but this was years ago. It's about the shape of the folded buggy rather than its overall volume, Eg maclarens and P&T tend to fold up long and thin, which is less good in a narrow car's boot.

Congratulations! We have quite a small car (about Polo sized) with twins and another child - there really is no need to get a huge car even now ds1 is a teenager! We did get a roof box which was useful for holidays.

RainOrSun · 07/10/2019 15:06

Is it a 5 door? In which case it will be ok, so long as you dont also have a dog!
It will require careful packing if all 4 of you go to the supermarket, or want to go on holiday.

Mimi45 · 07/10/2019 15:10

If you have a sixth generation Polo it will be fine they're nearly as big as the Goff's

Mimi45 · 07/10/2019 15:29

If it's a 6th generation Polo it will be fine because they are nearly as big as the Golfs

QueenOfThePumpkins · 07/10/2019 20:44

Super helpful responses, thanks everyone! I'm only 5ft 2 and I like to do the driving, but DH is not very tall either. The car is new and has 5 doors. Although a bigger one would probably make life easier, it seems do-able to keep the Polo which is really what I wanted to hear. I love the car, and would rather keep it than swap for something bigger but not as new, which is what the choice would be as I don't want to spend any more. I'm terrible at parking and have bad spatial awareness so hate the thought of a big car too! Roof box is a fab idea for holidays. Thanks again Smile

I have a polo you will be fine. I currently have a car seat for a toddler and a booster for a older child.

God knows how I’ll manage when baby number 3 arrives in 2 months!

NooneToldMeItWasRaining · 07/10/2019 20:52

We found our 5 door polo just about ok with 1 baby (although a squeeze with the pushchair). We got a bigger car when our second came along due to room for the car seat behind the driver. If I am being honest I think you will struggle but it is probably do-able

Littletabbyocelot · 07/10/2019 20:53

We had to get a bigger car as my DH is tall. However, boot wise we'd have been fine with a small car - we used a sling from very early on (either my husband with a double or us with one each). It was so much easier than the pram.

WTFdidwedo · 08/10/2019 18:21

NooneToldMeItWasRaining what on earth are you transporting that one baby is a squeeze?!

NooneToldMeItWasRaining · 08/10/2019 19:13

WTF nothing particularly exceptional. Child, pushchair and change bag.

Our uppababy vista pushchair was a squeeze to get in the boot, we had to take the wheels off to get it in. They are not the biggest of boots. Plus with a pebble car seat, you have to pull the passenger's seat quite far forward to fit it in, which when you are heavily pregnant is not a barrel of laughs either

amusedbush · 08/10/2019 19:17

I don’t have kids but I do have a Polo Grin I’m 5’4 so my legroom is fine but 6’ 3 DH has to push the seat back quite far. I don’t imagine that car seats would be a problem but the boot is really quite small so I’d be concerned about a double buggy. It’s actually no bigger than the boot in my old Fiat 500 Confused

NooneToldMeItWasRaining · 08/10/2019 19:17

Neither my husband or I could have driven with a babyseat behind us in the polo, not enough leg room (we are 5ft7 and 5ft10 so pretty average). I think it would be a struggle with 2 babies, but with a different baby seat it may work

joffreyscoffee · 08/10/2019 19:24

Well I only have the 1 DD and we have a van! The Nissan X-trail we had before that wasn't big enough for us. We do have 2 dogs in a crate though.

Couldn't be dealing with the squeeze to be honest. How would you fit a double pram in?

WTFdidwedo · 08/10/2019 20:13

My mountain buggy duet folds flat to just under a metre long, 63cm wide and about 35cm high as the wheels lay flat under it when folded. I "stand" it up in my Fabia's boot and it's fine, although it's incredibly heavy so a bit of a pain in the arse. The Polo's boot is marginally larger than the Fabia's too I think. People do manage, it just seems quite common these days to buy obscenely large cars as soon as you have children!

DoubtingMyPatience · 08/10/2019 20:14

Is it a 18/19 reg polo? The new polls are similar size to a golf and I can imagine that will be plenty! Although I think with twins you’re always going to get a bit stuck with boot space xx

NooneToldMeItWasRaining · 08/10/2019 21:12

Ours is a 2012 model, so that may be smaller

Mrscog · 08/10/2019 21:15

Definitely fine - I had an older (smaller) polo with 2 dc both rear facing and it was fine - just choose a small pushchair for them. Congrats!
