Severe pmt - gynaecologist rec inducing menopause with gnrh

I have severe pmt. it’s horrific. I’ve managed with fluoxetine for two weeks prior to periods, but this last period the fluoxetine gave me insomnia, badly.

The gynaecologist is recommending I take gnrh Analogues, Sam an injection - this May effect my bones etc. I’m terrified, just wondering if others have taken this or had experience with this drug.

I had them for six months. It's an injection in your belly. It's not pleasant but it's over within seconds.

Once it starts to take effect, I felt great. All the PMT symptoms vanished and I just felt normal again. I did have some mild menopause symptoms like hot flushes but they were very brief and manageable. If you get worse menopause symptoms, you can have a bit of add back HRT.

As they worked so well, I've since had a hysterectomy with ovaries out too. I'm on estrogen only HRT now. I feel better than I have done in many years. I did get bad menopause symptoms afterwards until I settled on the HRT. Now I have no periods, no PMT and the HRT is keeping all the menopause symptoms away.

I had three of the gnrh injections before a gynae op. I got quite sweaty and had insomnia but it was tolerable

I had this as a precursor to hysterectomy. It's just a series of injections that temporarily induce menopause, to see if you feel better during that time. It worked for me, none of the agonising pmt symptoms. I went on to have a hysterectomy and it was the best thing I did. In addition to pmt symptoms I had terrible pelvic pain and endometriosis both of which were solved by the hysterectomy.

If you're struggling with the pmt, give it a go. The bone issue would be only what you'd have with hysterectomy or oopherectomy if that is what you are considering.

I take oestrogen only HRT too as was only 38 when had op

I recall reading about the injections at the time, any side effects are reversed when treatment stops, you can only have a maximum of 6 I think.

Thanks for the replies. I have a few questions but the first is did you all have this for pmt?

So are the injections really to assess whether a hysterectomy would be helpful? The injections obviously only go on for 6-9 months and my fear is it will all come back again when they stop (if Ofcours they’re successful).

Sew rainbow sorry you did answer my questions! Did you have many side effects?

I think my gynaecologist told me my ovaries may not produce like they used to post injections and that may in itself help. Not sure if I’ve misremembered this.

I'm not sure about whether the injections will prevent problems in the future. I had my course then there was a delay and I do recall my pmt coming back whilst not having the injections but then I had my op about 3 months later. I dont remember side effects with the inje tions but it was 5 years ago now.

It was PMDD that I had. All the PMT like symptoms did come back when the final injection wore off.

I was offered surgery and HRT or the injections with six months on and six months off ongoing until I reached natural menopause. That would have been 10-15 years of injections, so I decided for the surgery.

Thanks for all your answers ladies. Interestingly this has been one of worst months for pmt, I’ve felt horrific sudden anger and tiredness. I used to have pmt for a few weeks before building up before my period, now it lasts well into my period too.

I’m nervous about having a hysterectomy o be honest but after this month am pretty adamant I’m going to go for the injections. I have osteoporosis in my family and heart disease so both factors to consider. I’m trying to weigh up if I don’t go for the hysterectomy if it’s worth going for injections if I’m only in them for 6 months.

So they wanted me to have a lovely vaginal scan prior to starting injections - not entirely sure why but can make some logical guesses. Scan showed some fluid in the sac of Douglas (which I’ve googled.... and the name seemed husband laugh) and go arranged to see me. Not sure if this will affect going ahead with injections.

Ironically one of my worst cases of pmt recently, just feeling tired forgetful and suddenly very angry. I knew what it was, and why it was happening. So, I’m going to go for the injections if giving the green light....
