....if I ate less but more expensive choc would that do the trick? Are there chocolate brands without palm oil?

Passthecherrycoke · 06/10/2019 16:42

Green and blacks don’t have palm oil and aren’t expensive.

DarkLikeVader · 06/10/2019 16:45

Lidl choc doesn’t have palm oil either I hunk and is very affordable. I love the hazelnut bar!

Zeldasmagicwand · 06/10/2019 16:46

Totally agree OP.
I usually buy my fair-trade chocolate from Lidl and Aldi. It's much better quality than Cadbury shite (I used to love Dairy Milk as a kid) and the yummy Guatemalan dark chocolate with Caramel I'm currently scoffing doesn't contain palm oil. 😋

somebrightmorning · 06/10/2019 16:51

great three brands already!

Green and Blacks seems expensive to me (appreciate that there's an argumenta that itshould be expensive)

the Lidl/Aldi thing sounds great but if always eat any chocolate that is in the house (longstanding habit) so I couldn't stock up IYSWIM.

Lidl and Aldi do lots of reasonably priced palm oil free chocolate and other products. We have been palm oil free now for about a year but have to get lots of things there.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 06/10/2019 17:02

Roses taste awful now they have palm oil in. YADNBU!

bathorshower · 06/10/2019 17:11

I get the nice co-op own brand stuff - just checked, and no palm oil.

somebrightmorning · 06/10/2019 17:12

thanks for checking brand - I'm in walking distance of a co-op.

Anyone know about ice-cream? (sorry I'm being lazy here but if other people have already done the research it would be nice to benefit from that).

Read the labels as some green and blacks does have palm oil.
For a cheap chocolate hit some of the super markets own, like Tesco's,don't have palm oil.

DontCallMeShitley · 06/10/2019 17:30

Green and blacks don’t have palm oil and aren’t expensive.

Some of Green and Black does contain palm oil and is owned by the company that uses palm oil in everything. Plus it tastes like cardboard.

If you want proper chocolate you need Tony's Chocolonely. It tastes like chocolate used to taste pre palm oil.

buzzing · 06/10/2019 18:14

I believe Milka doesn’t have palm oil, neither does the new Dark Milk thing that Cadbury’s do.

somebrightmorning · 06/10/2019 19:50

ok getting a bit more complicated...

Try this www.ethicalconsumer.org/palm-oil/palm-oil-free-list

KTD27 · 06/10/2019 19:55

Tony’s chocolonely is amazing stuff.

Deadlysinner · 06/10/2019 19:58

Ooh yes, a friend mentioned Tony's Chocolonely and I've started seeing it everywhere!

NearlyGranny · 06/10/2019 20:03

Tony's chocolonely! No palm oil, committed to fair trade and totally yummy, especially the honey and almond one.

somebrightmorning · 06/10/2019 20:49

great, thank you.

so avoid cadburys...

OP posts:
Bcnamechanger · 06/10/2019 20:55

You don't necessarily have to avoid Cadbury. They've just launched Darkmilk. It doesn't have Palm oil. It's £1 per bar (85g) in Sainsbury's at the moment, which is the same bar price as dairy milk (115g). You do know the economics of chocolate? Palm is cheaper than cocoa butter because they call sell cocoa butter for beauty products etc so you can expect to pay more for nonpalm products (brand not withstanding).

somebrightmorning · 06/10/2019 21:13

thanks for the straightforward explanation

OP posts:
somebrightmorning · 15/12/2019 18:32

Ds has okayed toblerone......

OP posts:
Pinkpanther473 · 15/12/2019 18:38

Sainsbury’s own brand milk choc tastes like Cadbury’s used to

Hopoindown31 · 15/12/2019 18:42

If you are giving up palm oil make sure you check your cosmetics and bath/shower products. Sodium lauryl/laureth sulphate is a common foaming agent and is derived from palm oil.

Iturnedmyfaceaway · 17/12/2019 18:35

bought two bars of chocolonely from Oxfam and we have an advent calendar stuffed with Toblerone.

Bring it on!

Now, what about Terry's chocolate orange.....?

haba · 17/12/2019 18:44

The plain milk or dark green and blacks don't have palm oil... but others such as the butterscotch definitely do have it in.
Tony's Chocolonely is £££ but they're huge bars, and v nice.
Palm oil is unfortunately in almost everything now.
Mince pies almost all have it in because it's in the vegetable suet in the mincemeat.
Waitrose No1 all butter don't have palm oil, but other "all butter" mince pies do!
All the Christmas puddings I've come across (Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Tesco) all have palm oil.
So do stollen. I have found lebkuchen at Waitrose that don't.
Also, all biscuits have it in bar Sainsbury's own brand Jaffa cakes (the full sized ones, mini ones have it in Confused), McVities Rich Tea (own brand have it in).
Ritz crackers used to, but switched back to sunflower oil Smile made my orangutan loving ritz-cracker-fan DS happy!
It's so hard to find things that don't have it in now. All the tubs of chocolates that we would have had at Christmas have palm oil.

ArlenesWoodBurningStove · 17/12/2019 18:54

I’m a bit late to the palm oil thing. It seems very labour intensive to check everything, particularly when palm oil has several names. I wonder how long it will be before goods are prominently labelled as palm oil free.
