I follow CBBC on Twitter. I expect content relevant to children.

What I have noticed over the last few weeks is a lot of content about Drag Race, either in tweets or retweets or likes. I'm not here to debate whether Drag Race is a good or bad thing but is it a programme CBBC should be so heavily promoting? I'm not saying it's necessarily unsuitable, just not relevant. I don't recall them ever giving so much attention to other non CBBC programmes.

Then this morning they have liked a tweet which I can understand very much other accounts liking or retweeting but I'm asking if CBBC should. It's from a gay man who says "I have finally edited my Grindr profile to have my HIV status as positive, undetectable." Again, I don't see how this is relevant for CBBC to be liking.

As I said in the title, I don't know if I'm being unreasonable and wanted to see what other people thought.

I don't think it's necessarily appropriate and definitely not relevant

coconuttelegraph · 05/10/2019 13:51

My dc are too old for CBeebies so I might not be the best person to ask but it sounds inappropriate to me

GrumpiestCat · 05/10/2019 13:52

Omg that Grindr "like" - I think someone's forgotten which account they're using or had a finger slip! I agree drag race isn't appropriate reference really. It's a show I like but I'm 44 not 10.

Doyoumind · 05/10/2019 13:55

I wondered if someone had forgotten to change account too but alongside the other stuff I'm just not sure.

It’s a bit weird, but since their target audience won’t be using twitter, not really anything to get worried about.

Isn’t the twitter account for adults to follow rather than children? The CBeebies instagram is very much aimed at grownups rather than kids. I don’t really use twitter, but maybe this is the case?

Doyoumind · 05/10/2019 13:58

I knew someone would come and tell me it's adults using twitter! I follow it for content that's relevant to my DC though and there will be some children on there, no doubt. Again, I didn't want to make the debate about suitability but more about relevance.

I have used Twitter in various capacities professionally and you need to be true to whichever organisation you are writing on behalf of.

My first thought would also be that they forgot they were doing the work account....do they promote other shows that aren't aimed at children?

CherieBabySpliffUp · 05/10/2019 14:03

I've just checked and can't find the tweet they liked so it must have been deleted. Twitter is for 13+ isn't it? Grindr I'm guessing is 18+ so no I don't think that was appropriate

OP I also use Twitter professionally but the last couple of years, all sorts of organisations are making points or blurring boundaries etc.

BuildBuildings · 05/10/2019 14:08

How old do you have to be to use twitter? It seems their account is aimed a parents not children.

BuildBuildings · 05/10/2019 14:09

The liked tweet is still there. I think it absolutely fine.

Doyoumind · 05/10/2019 14:10

No, the tweet is still there. You may not see it on their main feed. Go to the Likes tab. It appeared on my feed because CBBC had liked it. The Drag Race stuff is in the main feed.

I think it’s about promoting inclusivity is it not?

Doyoumind · 05/10/2019 14:19

Possibly it is.
