Garage reneging on part ex value

I have a motability car ordered which I will pick up in 10 days. There is an upfront payment but I'm putting my current car in part exchange. The sales manager has twice given me a figure of 4,300, but I have nothing in writing. The salesman rang me today and asked me to bring my car in for assessment. ( it only has 23000 miles on the clock) He now says they are offering me 3000 for it. I'm gobsmacked tbh, it's my only form of collateral for the upfront payment. AIBU to want the original figure offered? The car is in good condition by the way 😐

You're not part-exchanging it. You're selling them the car as a separate transaction.

Had they seen the car when they offered £4300? You'd be surprised to learn that very few people who describe their car for an 'unseen' valuation are perfectly honest. If not, the £4300 would be a "subject to" valuation, i.e. "We'll give you £4300 if it's as described".

YANBU to want the original figure, but you won't get it. They know you need to sell it.

nilcarborundum · 04/10/2019 17:08

Yes they saw it. The salesman walked around the outside and pointed out a cracked light which we knew about .

I've also had the same amount offered by a different dealer, as seen! I'm not hiding anything, it's 5 years old and obviously not immaculate, there are a few marks on the paintwork, but they knew that and I'm the only owner.

You can certainly try and stand your ground but they might not budge. This is common practice when trading in caravans, the dealer drops the price offered on the day (last time as I was actually transferring stuff from one to the other). But then they normally haven’t seen it upfront.

I wonder if they made an error with the initial price and are trying to backtrack now?

SleepyKat · 04/10/2019 17:13

Tell them you’ll go to a different dealer who has offered more.

nilcarborundum · 04/10/2019 17:29

Yes SleepyKat I'm going to do that. Motability have also told me I can cancel the car with them at any time. Should be an interesting conversation!
I'm so angry about this Angry

Have you tried webuyanycar.com to see what they value your car at.
Might be worth a look though I suppose they might have issues if your old car is modified for a disability.

nilcarborundum · 04/10/2019 18:53

Grumpy, yes I have! WBAC offered me 4,700 but I know they always drop the price when they see the car so I didn't follow it up.
My car is not adapted in any way for disability, but it is a semi- automatic.

OP posts:
SleepyKat · 04/10/2019 19:08

Being a semi automatic shouldn’t cause them to drop the price. They’re more expensive than manuals! Also did he not know it was a semi automatic at the time of the first price?

helpfulperson · 04/10/2019 20:29

WBAC will quote the book price for a perfect car initially. This is a standard price that you will get on any online part exchange quote.

Then a garage will take off money for less than perfect car. You know about the cracked light. It's legitimate to ask what other items they are taking money off for.

You will rarely get the full book price but ive never known anyone get £1700 less unless the car needs major work.

@flouncyfanny I'm going to try and bluff my way through to getting at least £4000, if not the deals off! I would have sold it myself but I'm feeling too ill to cope with that at the moment. The car that I have is getting older now and is going to need work sooner or later, so I thought it was time for a change 🤷‍♀️

Thank you helpful person! It's a complete mystery to me 😐

OP posts:
nilcarborundum · 06/10/2019 18:52

They valued it yesterday and said £3,800 😐 I'm so stressed about this.

princessib · 06/10/2019 19:16

You can call the deal off right up until you put the PIN number in to process the sale. Honestly please don’t let it stress you, it isn’t worth it. Just be clear that if they don’t give you what you want the sale is cancelled, then go to another garage and start again. You are the one with the power in this situation.
I hate the whole process of car changing/buying so you do have my sympathy!

SleepyKat · 06/10/2019 19:34

Drive to another garage, find a similar price car even if youre not serious about it and ask how much they would give you for yours. Get some comparisons.

nilcarborundum · 06/10/2019 23:46

@princessib I think that's what I'm going to do. This car has been ordered since July so it's really annoying to have to start again. But I've checked with Motability and they say it's ok to cancel. So it's their last chance tomorrow!

OP posts:
nilcarborundum · 06/10/2019 23:48

@SleepyKat I had a higher offer from the Honda dealer so I know I can get more, it's so frustrating. I'm not being greedy, I really do need the money! And I know that my car is worth over £6000 pounds sold privately, I'm just not well enough to do it myself 😐
