To ask if I would be crazy to do it all on my own?

I live in a 3 bed that could really do with some painting! I don't have anyone to help me or can afford to pay someone to do it. Would I be crazy to paint the house and put some furniture together( bunk bed, double bed frame and IKEA single wardrobes) on my own? Anyone done something similar on their own?

I've done this loads of times. It's no big deal.

Just plan it well - e.g. if you are doing a particular room, clear it out the night beforehand as much as possible, and move the rest of the furniture to the middle of the room and cover it.
Put down dustsheets to protect the floors.
Prep properly - it's my least favourite job but really helps the finish.
I've painted my own 3 bed (prob several times at this stage!) and have put together every single piece of furniture myself - beds, wardrobes, sofas. I also tiled the kitchen (floor, splashback) and the porch floor (twice) and put down laminate in the hall and sitting room. YouTube is brill for instructions.

Is there more you haven't included in your post?

Full time job, 3 small toddlers at home all day or something?

What you're planning is totally doable unless there's something you've omitted. I can't afford decorators either, painting is quick and easy but see above about the prep

Painting yes, Ikea furniture NO!
A few months ago I bought an Ikea wardrobe and tried to put it together alone.
To cut a long story short it collapsed with me underneath it. I was ok but the wardrobe was buggered! £100 down the drain cos I was impatient. Had to buy another one.
You need someone to hold it while you assemble it, in my experience. Might just be me being no good at flat pack furniture though .
Good luck.

No, get stuck in.

pikapikachu · 04/10/2019 14:44

Ikea stuff- with big items you usually need a second pair of hands to hold things steady etc

Painting - depends how tall the highest points are. I can paint the rooms on my own fine but the hallway is really tall and I don't have a ladder tall enough or the inclination to be that high up on the stairs.

Sounds fine to me!

MargoLovebutter · 04/10/2019 14:49

I've done all of that and it is doable. It is also all quite tiring, so that does need to be considered.

Walls are fairly easy to paint, but ceilings are a bitch - in my personal opinion!

IKEA furniture is quite tricky to do all by yourself and without some tools. I've invested over the years in power tools and that makes a big difference. Trying to put something like an IKEA wardrobe together with a screwdriver will take the best part of a century (believe me I know, because I've done it).

All that said, the sense of satisfaction is immense. I diagnosed a plumbing issue just recently, was able to purchase the appropriate parts and replace them myself and I honestly felt like I'd just been awarded an honorary doctorate from Oxford Uni!!!!!! Grin

I’ve painted, wallpapered, laid laminate floor and made double beds/ wardrobes on my own. It’s all really straightforward. For bunk beds I enlisted the help of the child they were for to help hold them upright at crucial points: do you happen to own a 6/7 year old? (A 5 year old will do at a push, but that was a bit tricky!)

Rainbowknickers · 04/10/2019 15:11

I was a single parent for 20 years and did everything in the house
I met my fella and he seems to think I’m some dainty girlie who needs a man
I cannot tell you how many times I’ve stomped off yelling in was a single mum-I didn’t have anyone to help me so I can do it-all by myself!!!’
We agreed that if I need to do flat pack/paint/paper then he goes out
Saved a few rows over the last 4 years!

Just do one thing at a time

katmarie · 04/10/2019 15:13

Go for it. Just remember with painting and decorating the more time you put into the planning and preparation, the better the outcome will be. There are millions of videos on YouTube with tips that will help you do a decent job of it.
