As the title says, have any of you experienced giving birth at home quickly without much warning?Shock just being noisy 🙈

No, but my friend did. Her waters went while she was doing the washing up and the baby came out too. Her three year old had to go into the garden and shout over the fence for her neighbour to come and help. Everything was fine in the end!

ChilledBee · 03/10/2019 15:02

Yes. Though you could call it an "unplanned homebirth" as the midwife made it here to catch. Had been contracting very irregularly all day which were barely painful then suddenly needed to push. My midwife was literally across the road at the clinic and my husband called her mobile and she sprinted across the road to catch.

It's funny because at my booking appointment I saw a birth pack in the room and asked her if that had ever happened to her and she said no but she's paranoid she'll give a sweep and someone will end up having the baby there.

DD came out covered in meconium so we took the ambulance in. She was fine and if it wasn't for that, she said we could have stayed at home. The boys were napping the whole time until their dad got them and said we have to go to the hospital because the baby is here. I'd have a home birth if I ever had another baby. It felt perfectly right being at home. I thought I'd need the clinical environment of at least the birth centre to feel safe.

Mopmum35 · 03/10/2019 15:04

Gosh must of been scary for her! Glad all was fine Smile

I knew a woman that it happened with all 3...wouldbgo over her sue date and then whoops a daisy, in labour on the or bathroom floor. Done in minutes, if to bed forms cup of a tea and lie down
Every. Time.
I only wish it were so easy for more women. It honestly never phased her and was glad she didnt have hospital etc.

YesQueen · 03/10/2019 15:10

Not myself but I've done an awful lot over the phone!

YDraig · 03/10/2019 15:11

I did, it was actually the most terrifying time of my life. My (now ex) partner was at work (warehousing) and I woke up at about 3:30am ish with contractions, my phone was flat because I’d forgotten to charge it when I went to bed so I couldn’t ring anyone for help. Contractions were coming heavy and fast and DD was delivered at 4:01am in the hallway of our block of flats, with the help of a neighbour and an ambulance turned up a few minutes later. I initially tried to hold out for my phone to come back on but when I realised I felt the urge to push I just instinctively knew I didn’t have time so I had to drag myself out to the hallway screaming and crying, banging on the neighbours door for help. Middle aged man who lived alone, genuinely not sure which one of us was more traumatised!!!!
He called 999 and they talked him through what to do, ambulance crew were there about 2-3 mins after she was born. It was surreal and terrifying. I was 17 and it was my first child and I can honestly say she will be my last (she’s 2 now)

agirlcalledBede · 03/10/2019 15:13

Yes. She's sitting on my lap now. My third child, and both #1 and #2 had come so quickly, and yet I stillllll hadn't quite realised I was that far along Grin

ButchBitch · 03/10/2019 15:15

My aunty had this.

Like a PP she'd been having contractions all day then suddenly she felt the need to push. She got to her front door and opened it to just randomly start shouting for help (before mobiles and they had no landline).

As she opened the door a couple of delivery men were dropping something to a neighbour and basically helped her deliver the baby in her hallway.

They made the local paper where much was made of the "delivery men" pun. The company who were delivering the stuff gave my aunt £200 gift vouchers for baby supplies.

littledrummergirl · 03/10/2019 15:15

Yes. Middle of the night, 35 weeks gone Ds2 decided to make an entrance. I thought I had D&V, when I finally twigged I might be in labour I told dh to call the midwife. They wouldn't come as too prem and suggested an ambulance. 25 mins after dh called them they arrived to find me holding the baby. He hadn't been breathing straight away but by the time dh had finished the call and come back upstairs - our only phone was downstairs - he had started.
One of the best but most terrifying moments of my life. Incidentally he turns 18 this week Smile

GinUnicorn · 03/10/2019 15:16

Yes first baby. Unplanned home birth as ita happened super quickly.

Mopmum35 · 03/10/2019 15:19

I was 39+1 , I got up and and made a brew and daughters breakfast, just as I was putting milk in I felt my first contraction, then I rang husband at work to tell him, I said ' stay at work I want to get a shower and shave my legs' anyway as soon as I put the phone down I had a really big contraction and the urge to PUSH I had my younger dd ( at the time with me) she was 13 months so I quickly put her in her travel cot and put tv on, went on the toilet but thought I cant possibly give birth on the loo!! So grabbed a towel upstairs and got on bed on all 4s then rang my husband telling him I was pushing, 2 pushes and baby was out, I then rang my childminder to ask her to pick up my dd cos I've just had the baby🤣 lasted under 50 mins from first contractions but pushing about 3 minsShock oh and didnt get chance to shave my legs, lucky husband got home just after baby born then rang 999.

I did - waters went and first contraction at 4.50pm whilst I was laying on the bed watching a film, needed to push straight away, midwife turned up at 5.20 with his head already out and cord caught on his neck - he was born by 5.35pm!

Mopmum35 · 03/10/2019 15:29

@YDraig how terrifying for you! I can just imagine how scared you were, but well done!

My friend had her second at home by accident. Paramedics arrived as the baby was crowning and told her to stop screaming Hmm
She was taken into hospital just to be checked over by midwife then went home a couple of hours later.

Mopmum35 · 03/10/2019 15:33

FairyJuice · 03/10/2019 15:37

Aw lovely thread but I imagine in a real life scenario, it can be terrifying, especially if you are alone when it happens 😱

ChanklyBore · 03/10/2019 15:37

Kind of. I planned a home birth but not an unassisted one. So I expected to give birth at home I just didn’t expect to be alone. I did get a midwife eventually. I also had a meconium covered baby but didn’t go to hospital, in fact midwife was in attendance for an hour all told. Never mind, baby was OK. I had another homebirth after.

Itsallpetetong · 03/10/2019 15:39

SIL did. DN was born 5 mins after the first contraction on the bathroom floor. Ambulance arrived several minutes later. The next DN was born at hospital after they took SIL in early ‘just in case’ and 5 mins after MW did a sweep baby no 2 was out.

Cousin also had such a quick labour they had to talk her DH through delivering the baby whilst they were waiting for the ambulance.

I had no such luck -36 hours Grin

Mopmum35 · 03/10/2019 15:41

@FairyJuice yep it is indeed special on your own, its really scary ( was with mine) specially as I had my 13 month old with me dh at work but instincts kick in though Smile
