Which charity for a wedding

Our wedding is coming up next June so we are sending out invites soon. We have everything we need for the house and have no use for candelsticks holders or picture frames etc. We are comfortable so feel it selfish and rude to ask for financial contributions towards the honeymoon. I suggested that we pick a charity that we would like people to donate to instead and putting the money to better use etc. So far I have thought about maybe the Make a Wish foundation but wanted to see if there is any other charities I should consider

We gave "favours" from McMillan, the little daffodil pins. Dogs trust do similar. You could buy that sort of thing and then ask people to donate if they wish.

DonPablo · 03/10/2019 10:56

The air ambulance. Totally run on donations, will come to you if youre white, black, foreign, fat, thin, old, young, a criminal, a saint, rich or poor. And if you ever do need it, you'll be glad someone donated!

Lovely idea. I'm passionate about the air ambulance though!

NewNameGuy · 03/10/2019 10:57

I hear mermaids do good work

KarmaStar · 03/10/2019 11:01

Animal Aid?lifeboats?national anti vivisection society?a small local charity to you?

redappleandaquamarinebow1987 · 03/10/2019 11:02

Thank you so much for the lovely sugestions. Really appreciate them both Macmillan and London's Air Ambulance have been on my list. Will read up about mermaids and what they do. Thank you so much

Well there’s hundreds just pick one that means something to you. My son and daughter in law did favours dementia( for her nan) and diabetes( for my grandson). Just little pins to attach to a jacket.

redappleandaquamarinebow1987 · 03/10/2019 11:05

@NewNameGuy I put them on the short list. It sounds like they do good work and deal with a issue that effects several people close to me so that is a good thing

I wonder if you could pick a few for people to choose from. I also think a small, local charity as an option because it will really make a difference to them. I also think the PDSA are a good charity. I can't imagine how awful it would be not to have the money to care for a sick pet. And for the pet of course. Also a friend of mine has a child with Diamond Blackfan Anaemia. It's very rare, so their charity would really appreciate a donation.

For me ... hearing dogs for the deaf. They are always overlooked in favour of guide dogs for the blind and struggle to cover costs.

PurpleDaisies · 03/10/2019 11:09

I’d choose something personal. What sorts of things do you care about most?

LittleSweet · 03/10/2019 11:10

Was NewNameGuy joking as Mermaids get a lot of criticism on the feminism boards?

WhateverHappenedToMe · 03/10/2019 11:10

Guide Dogs, Mental Health (I received a pack of sunflower seeds from a mental health charity as a wedding favour), Air Ambulance, Samaritans

redappleandaquamarinebow1987 · 03/10/2019 11:10

Been thinking of maybe picking kidney research uk. 2 years ago I lost my father after what was supposed to be a routine operation. Before he died he was on dyalasis 3 times a week. Though I realise his was brought on by his own lifestyle and habits there is people who suffer like he without it being due to poor choices

Reckon newnameguy was stirring?

PurpleDaisies · 03/10/2019 11:12

That sounds like a good idea. I think people would prefer to donate to a charity with personal links.
Sorry you lost your dad. Flowers

NearlyGranny · 03/10/2019 11:13

What a lovely idea! In a greedy, grabby world, you're thinking of others.

I wish you both every happiness.

Justanothernameonthepage · 03/10/2019 11:14

We picked the hospital that had helped my DF.
Kidney research sounds like a great idea

redappleandaquamarinebow1987 · 03/10/2019 11:14

@PurpleDaisies unfortunately there is just too many things that I care about to pick from though animals and children have always been especially close to me as I feel they need care and protection even more unable to be an advocate for themselves

If you’re looking for a great children’s charity, consider the National Deaf Children’s Society. They do campaigns, training for parents and professionals, research, and loads of great opportunities for deaf children.

redappleandaquamarinebow1987 · 03/10/2019 11:17

@NearlyGranny thank you so much for the wishes.

I have also considered Girl Guides as I help out there once a week at my local rainbows but thought in comparison to some other needs it seems less urgent though I could be wrong

A Mental Health charity would be my choice personally.
We all have different charities close to our hearts if we or our loved ones have been affected by certain things.

MsSquiz · 03/10/2019 11:17

We had Marie Curie pin badges on the place cards and asked for donations in lieu of gifts as my mum died at one of their hospices 3 months before we got married.

redappleandaquamarinebow1987 · 03/10/2019 11:18

@PurpleDaisies thank you so much for your condolences. Also a great suggestion I will put them on our list

Choose a charity that means something to you, so Kidney Research UK would be a really perfect fit.Or perhaps a small, local charity, lots of small, grassroots charities really struggle to raise funds and so the relatively small amounts donated by individuals make a HUGE difference.

I love the idea of charity favours and donations instead of wedding gifts/table favours. Really great idea for the couple who has everything Smile
