Essay question "Evaluate the effective use of an appropriate secondary machining technique". No engineering knowledge needed for this! Each of the techniques has already been described in a lot of detail and the question does not relate to the production of something specific. I think this question is confusingly worded. If it was about something specific, the answer could be framed along the lines of "a grinder would be effective in finishing item ABC because of XYZ reasons but the disadvantage might be CDE reasons". Approach taken has been to say "grinder does ABC as does milling machine but grinder more effective because is also does CDE". Any interpretations gratefully received!

It doesn't matter what the essay is about, they ask you to describe the same thing again and again.

I see what you mean "appropriate" to what?

Is there nothing in the question above that it links to?

If not just describe a technique and why that one was chosen.

I think perhaps this is one for either your tutor or any other engineering student

The student has been to both tutor and fellow students - lots of fusion all round! I think it's just a poorly worded question.

Username updated on other duplicate thread but not this one 🤷🏼‍♀️

The words 'effective' and 'appropriate' are the key words here. Presumably you will be aware of various secondary maching techniques and will therefore be able to assess those you consider are the most effective and appropriate for a particular job.
Select a job and then select an effective and appropriate technique to undertake that job. Discuss why you selected that technique and state the benefits of it.

Evaluate means to rate that technique so you need to form a comparison or comparisons with other techniques and state the reasons for your choice being more effective and appropriate for the job in hand.

@Idontwanttotalk after some reflection that's exactly where we've landed. I think the confusion was in not being given a specific workpiece to use in the evaluation of a technique, but that's why is a distinction question! For each technique, an example workpiece and appropriate technique has been chosen, and assessed (eg milling machine to make a guitar) and then explanation as to why other techniques that could do the same job aren't as effective. Thanks!
