To not be able to put up with this pain

Hi sorry I'm getting desperate and losing my perspective so need some advice.
For almost 8 weeks I've suffered with lower back pain. I woke up one morning and it was there. It would last a couple of hours in the morning then twinges through the day then worse again at night. I went to the doctor who checked I could feel my legs and there was no numbness so prescribed 30/500 co codemal, naproxen and a low dose of diazempam.
I thought it had gone last week then on Monday morning this week when I woke I could barely walk. I went to the out of hours as it was a holiday here and the doctor there got the nurse to give me an injection in my bottom of what I think was dihydrocodeine (I was in too much pain to listen properly).
Nothing has helped and I'm struggling to cope but don't want to bother them again.

It feels like there is a heavy weight pushing me down and that all my internal organs are dragging down. Every step I take feels like my hips are going to snap.

Currently in tears at the thought of trying to get my shoes on to go and do the school run and the thought of the walk (a 10 minute walk now takes me 40 minutes of agony)

Is this normal with back pain? Is it just a case of riding it out? The only investigation they have carried out were urine samples and I've had the feeling that they don't understand why I am bothering them. AIBU?

@YesQueen, sorry posted too early with the last one Shock.
The consultant said the surgery is 'bread and butter stuff', done regularly and pretty easy to do. So why are they so happy to leave people in so much pain when the surgery will improve life so much?

I hate taking painkillers so I know if I'm asking for them I'm in absolute agony and can't take any more pain. it only takes the edge off anyway. Sadly the nursing staff just assume you're wanting to be pumped full of painkillers.
So sorry to hear about your cousin Thanks

I hope the MRI shows the issue and you're sorted soonest lass.

MaintainTheMolehill · 05/10/2019 08:47

Some of these posts are terrifying, how people are expected to just live in pain.

I was kept in last night, Nil by mouth today as they are trying to get me the scan in the city hospital today. I've a horrible feeling though that they will just keep me here all weekend and do the scan here on Monday. I know I need it checked and I know I'm in the best place but I've spent the past few hours in tears. Just want to go home to my husband and kids.

Oh well hopefully when I go home the pain will be sorted.

Is it an MRI you're having? At least you're being taken seriously now, it's a rough time regardless though. With any luck it will be something easily fixable.

Wishing you all the best, I hope you feel better soon. Flowers

MaintainTheMolehill · 05/10/2019 10:59

Yes it's an MRI. Just been told I'm bring transferred to the bigger hospital and the neurosurgeon wants it done today. Really scared now.

Hope all is well OP. It’s good they’re taking it seriously and there’s every chance the MRI shows nothing serious, but at least you’ll know for certain. Flowers

WhoCaresWins01 · 05/10/2019 11:41

You must be really frightened but it's good news that you are getting expert attention and are being transferred to a specialist centre.
Hopefully you will have answers and a treatment plan very soon.

Kazoofromhell · 05/10/2019 11:43

You’re bound to be feeling apprehensive but thank goodness they’re getting an MRI done today and are going to the most appropriate hospital. hope you soon get some answers and treatment. Sending best wishes that you are soon feeling better Flowers

itsgettingweird · 05/10/2019 11:46

Sorry you're experiencing such pain.

But I'm more glad for the fantastic Mners who can advise in what to tell dr and that it sounds like you're going to get the help you need Thanks

madcatladyforever · 05/10/2019 11:51

I live with this 24/7 but luckily am so used to it I can pretty much ignore now as long as I can rest up at weekends (work full time).
I find the best thing is to keep moving, walk everywhere, don't get stiff, take pain killers during the acute episode or you won't cope, do some gentle stretches.
They can't do anything for me so I've had to learn how to manage it. Sitting for any length of time will make it worse.

WhoCaresWins01 · 05/10/2019 12:59

@madcatladyforever have you actually read the full thread?

CottonSock · 05/10/2019 16:25

I hope they get you scanned today. Totally normal to feel tearful I'd imagine.

serenoa · 05/10/2019 21:49

Relieved to hear that you're getting proper attention now, OP. Severe back pain like this tears you apart physically and emotionally.

Thank you for the update; I hope you're getting the right pain management now.

Missingsandraohingreys · 05/10/2019 22:20

Ah OP . Sending Flowers your way x good luck

MaintainTheMolehill · 06/10/2019 12:23

Well I had my scan last night, everything is fine nerve/disc related. The Neuro guy said that I could go back to the referring hospital to investigate other causes but to be honest after 7 hours not being allowed a drink of water and 48 hours with no food I was just desperate to get home.

I'm slightly regretting that decision today as the pain is still there but the way I saw it was they wouldn't have admitted me to hospital with back pain anyway. So I'll make an appointment with my gp this week and just go from there.

Thanks for all your lovely comments. It was good having somewhere I didn't have to act not scared as I had to not let the rest of the family worry.

I bet you wish they would have found something in a way don’t way. At least then they could have sorted it.
After all it’s got to be something causing it. You don’t get back ache for nothing

Missingsandraohingreys · 07/10/2019 06:41

The good news is you have been thoroughly checked and it’s nothing nerve related

Get some rest and then get back on the horse . You can rule out the nasty

But now it
Might be that some
Osteo (for pain ) but then physio is needed to nail this

Honestly I was in so much pain and got really low and was having so many drugs

Once I started physio and the other Changes I can safely say I have NO pain anymore

Good luck Flowers

smileylottie87 · 08/10/2019 10:06

How are you doing @MaintainTheMolehill ?

MaintainTheMolehill · 08/10/2019 10:56

Thanks for asking Smile I'm still in pain, saw the GP yesterday though who has made an urgent referral to physio for me and has now got me on pregabalin, diazepam, cocodemal and naproxen. The pregabalin seems to be taking the edge of it so I've managed into uni today. Not taking a word in right enough though because I feel as if I'm off my face on drugs Grin

Really pleased that something is being done though.

I think you should go back, don’t feel bad about it it is their job to help people with sickness and injuries and you are still in a lot of pain so your latest visit wasn’t enough for you. I have had bad lower back pain in the past After pulling mine and it was awful, so I really feel for you! It was a long time ago now but I do remember basically not being able to move or walk properly without really strong sharp pains that would make you feel winded and bending ect was out of the question! They might be able to do more for you, sometimes with stuff like that it takes a few visits and maybe physio as one of the other posters said to be left in a better position! Certainly worth going back though, no harm getting double checked if you are still feeling awful, and making sure there isn’t anything else going on that needs to be addressed.

smileylottie87 · 08/10/2019 11:42

I have just finished a similar dug cocktail and as you said I've never felt anything like it, completely off my face 😂 just make sure to watch out for the drug interactions, one of mine reacted badly so had to come off it.

Still doesn't take care of all the pain but the physio and the osteopath told me the only thing that would do that would be morphine but it must be a relief to have the edge taken off.

Great to hear you are at uni today, just take it slow and stop and rest whenever is possible. So pleased you are going in the right direction, keep on at them and hopefully you'll get the continued help and care you deserve soon Thanks

MaintainTheMolehill · 08/10/2019 12:19

Aw thank you glad to hear that this doesn't last forever you've given me hope Flowers
