Royals let's give them the ability to opt out of all British Press Coverage

Just an idea, based on the current litigation by the Duchess of Sussex. Should we give each Royal the ability to completely opt out of British press coverage. No negative press but also no coverage of any engagements whether public or private. Mainstream media blackout. They would be allowed to use their own social media accounts only.

Is this unreasonable? Do you think there would be any take up? Would surely solve Harry's current complaints.

Yeah that’s fine! I’m not paying for it.
Just get a job and a mortgage while they’re at it!!!

I think we can trial it with the Royals and if successful offer it to other celebrities.

Hmm, define "celebrities". How many people are only celebrities because they spend so much time actively courting publicity, including the negative kind? And what about ordinary people? Could they opt out too? Also, what about the foreign media - and indeed the different parts of the UK? At present, we have the rather peculiar situation where a celebrity can take out a super-injunction effective in England and Wales but the Scottish press is free to write about it and approximately three clicks on the internet would take you to a reputable foreign news site that is also able to report it.

I think the digital age changed everything. News reporting now is instant and global. Nothing can really be hidden forever. People who choose to live in the public eye - and that includes the Royal Family, who benefit from taxpayer money - have to live with, and manage that. They have special training and support to do so; resources not available to the rest of us.

I am sorry that the Duchess of Sussex has such a tricky relationship with her father. This must be a daily source of worry and hurt to her. However, he has shown himself to be unreliable in the past when it comes to respecting her privacy and sending him any correspondence at all is always a risk. Sadly.

I quite like the royals 😞

How could a blanket press ban do anything apart from guild their cage a bit more? They are public figures. If they don't like it they can step out of the public eye. You can't have you cake and eat it,

ChocChocButtons · 02/10/2019 14:56

The royal family are funded by the public, we fund their lifestyle. I don’t mind that because they bing economy form tourism to Uk.

The reason people are is anti Meghan is because she’s happy to spend millions of tax payers money etc but then cries privacy. The press would leave her alone if she stopped acting like the public are beneath her.

ChocChocButtons · 02/10/2019 14:58

I’m all for privacy. I don’t need to see or know about any celebrities life. They choose to share what they want. Because they find their own lives.

No one wants much seeing those pictures of Archie was perfect, I didn’t need more then that.

fund

Weirdest thing I’ve read on mn all week.

CripsSandwiches · 02/10/2019 15:02

No we should just have certain standard in our press which means they don't invade people's privacy unless it's in the public's best interest. The royal family aren't lavishly kept pets, keep them or don't keep them but the fact we finance them doesn't mean they aren't entitled to a private life.

ChocChocButtons · 02/10/2019 15:05

They are of course entitled to a private life and I think for the most part they are left alone. Megan’s problem is a bad bad PR person. She needs better advisors.

If they sacrifice literally every privilege, and essentially become normal citizens, get normal jobs, work (actually work, not just photo ops) for their money, don’t accept a penny from the public, pay for their own homes and everything else - sure! While they’re sponging off the public, nah.
