To not call 111?

So as not to dripfeed but also to alert you that I’m not great at replying my 19 month old had a UTI last month that an out of hours GP prescribed antibiotics for, without testing his wee or examining him. He had a mild fever and very smelly wee, but it was a weekend so I called 111 and they advised him to be seen in 4 hours. We don’t drive so we had a 40 minute bus ride at 8pm.

Anyway, he’s had strong smelling wee again the past few days over the weekend again, and I’ve come home from work to find he’s got another mild fever and not eating or drinking as much as usual. He’s breastfeeding still so I’m not too worried that on its own.

So AIBU to just monitor him until tomorrow? Every time I call 111 for advice they tell me to take him to a&e or arrange an appointment within 4 hours at a “nearby” hospital. My anxiety is not helping me believe I’m being reasonable.

When you say 'mild fever', how high is it? I'd be reluctant to leave a UTI go as they can take hold quickly, especially if it's the case that the original infection hasn't cleared properly. However, if you're talking about a temp of under 38 and he is drinking some amount and weeing ok without pain or distress, I would consider leaving it til morning.

Thanks for replying, his temperature peaked at 37.9 but he’s since had calpol and is at a normal range. I honestly can’t tell if he’s in pain or discomfort, he’s such a happy boy all the time.

I would be comfortable to leave til the morning then as long as he is weeing and temp is coming down. No pint dragging him to ooh at all hours of the night when he could get a good night's sleep and go to go first thing. Hope he feels better pp, my little lad suffered from a recurrent UTI as a toddler and it was a worry.

go to gp

Just take him to your GP!

Mummoomoocow · 01/10/2019 22:23

Thanks @AgesAndAges, can’t argue with that sound reasoning!

How did you get on with the GP op?

SuzieSunshine · 02/10/2019 16:14

What was diagnosed the first time round and was he given any medication?

Mummoomoocow · 02/10/2019 21:35

Heya, we gave them a sample and they’d said there wasn’t any bugs to show an infection but it was clearly cloudy and smelly, I was told he was dehydrated and his fever and irritability may be down to another illness starting up.

They want another sample on Friday to make sure they haven’t missed something.

The first time round they never tested his urine, the OOH GP just took one look at his tight foreskin and sniffed his wet nappy and prescribed antibiotics for a UTI
