We’ve moved to a town about half an hour from where we used to live. Adult Dd’s Mental health team are on our backs about changing doctors so they can transfer her to the team here. Now moving doctors will be hard enough for her she’s had the same doctor since she was two but coupled with the mental health team also being changed this could really set her back. The team are the same health care trust so I’m assuming funding is the same and she’s not in completely different area. From my understanding of the law I could ask for dd to still be registered with our current doctors? But they can say no which is understandable but I do feel this will really set her back. Any advice would be appreciated thank you in advance.

I believe that you can ask to join (or remain with) a GP practice out of your own catchment area. As you say, though, the surgery can refuse. Have you and your daughter spoken to her current GP, explaining the concerns. I think that should be your first action, then go from there.

Thank you we are planning on doing that however the psychiatrist has implied that they will think it’s to do with her eupd rather than her needing to stay there. I really believe it will put her at risk if she’s moved especially at the moment.

Do they do many home visits to you? Is it a different A and E or a different crisis team?
Have they given you a reason why the change would be better? I can see why you would be concerned about changing several supports all at once.

Nope she’s very physically healthy but has obviously been supported for her mental health by the gp’s over the years. She’s been unwell since she was a teenager unfortunately. No just that it’s standard practice that they transfer her to this new team.

They will need you to transfer team because of things like the issue of if your daughter were to require home visits. You can see the drain on resources if a professional had to travel 2x30 mins as well as the duration of the visit.

If you really thought your daughter couldnt manage a change in health team you probably shouldn't have moved out of area, unfortunately. But you could speak to the GP and if they are happy for her to remain under their care (for a determined period of time - unlikely to be long term) then she would be above to remain under the care of the same team for that duration too.

We moved about 10 minutes away for a much bigger house when DC were small, but it took us across a practice boundary. I was keen to stay with our practice as I adored our lovely GP who had seen us through our infertility struggles and I couldn't face 'breaking in' a new one!

They agreed to let us stay but said no house calls, ever, which was fine. Who expects house calls?!

Then DD2 who was 4 at the time fell critically ill with perforated appendix and peritonitis, 2 operations, and had to be wound dressed daily for a couple of weeks while she recovered. Hospital left the wound unstitched to heal by granulation so as not to seal in any remaining infection. 😷

Practice agreed to try gas and air for the process the first time at the surgery after she was discharged, as the unpacking and repacking was so traumatic for her. Afterwards the nurse called at the house every day for about 10 days to do the dressing, lugging the cylinder up the stairs until she didn't need it. No mention of our agreement or boundaries.

It was totally worth negotiating to stay with the practice who knew us. I so hope you can stay with yours, OP!

She’s never had home visits nor would expect anyone to do them. The move unfortunately wasn’t any of our choices without going into detail.
