..... and if so, what do you do?!

I work in Corporate Governance and it’s mind numbingly boring and monotonous. I fell in to this career years ago rather than choosing it but now my experience, qualifications and skills are all very specific to this field and don’t seem to be particularly transferable. Due to my role being quite specialist and well paid, it’s not easy to change career without taking a substantial pay cut which I just can’t really do (mortgage etc).

Every day consists of clock watching, wishing the day away and thinking about how much I’d rather be anywhere else but there. I work with nice people, the role is relatively low stress, performance wise I’m doing well... I’m just utterly bored and demotivated inside. From Monday onwards I count down to the weekend and even by Sunday I feel horrendous about the thought of another week at work.

Some of my colleagues appear to love their job and I wonder whether I’m the odd one out. I often daydream about quitting the job all together or getting signed off work just for a break from the boredom, but of course I don’t. I sit at my desk and/or in meetings thinking to myself, is this really how life is supposed to be?

I’m genuinely interested to know whether others feel the same or if this isn’t the norm. I know those who come across me at work would have no idea I feel this way. I can’t speak to many people about this IRL as it’s a bit shameful. I know I should be grateful to be in well paid employment but it doesn’t help how I feel.

For those who do enjoy their jobs, I’m very interested to know what you do if you don’t mind sharing please!

Dental Nurse and love it. The only part I hate about it is the tooth box 🤢🤮 the smell is so disgusting

WhoKnewBeefStew · 01/10/2019 23:03

I work in IT and love it. I work from home so can be flexible with my dc, walk the dogs and go to the gym when work allows it. I manage my own calendar and as long as my customers are happy and they and I don't give my boss any hassle he leaves me to it. I get out and about a lot and it's more around customer relationships than techie stuff

DracarysThis · 01/10/2019 23:04

I enjoy my work, just not 90% of the people. I'm a middle manager who speaks their mind, i.e. I'll not progress any further.

ilovepixie · 01/10/2019 23:05

Hate my job. I'm in retail and my boss is a dick.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 01/10/2019 23:16

I'm another teacher on this thread with 25 years experience. There's still nothing I would rather do, despite the stress sometimes.

Whatevskev · 01/10/2019 23:19

@BlahBlahBlahh what on earth is a tooth box??

Whatevskev · 01/10/2019 23:23

@TwatCat that is so wonderful to hear you say- you do an amazing job and wish you were paid what you are actually worth

BlahBlahBlahh · 01/10/2019 23:23

@Whatevskev a tooth box is where you place teeth which have been extracted that contain amalgam. The boxes get collected by a specialist company. I hope and pray that the tooth doesn't have amalgam 🙈

OvertiredandConfused · 01/10/2019 23:29

I’m a charity CEO. Absolutely love it. I work quite long hours - down to about 45 per week at the moment - but do have flexibility for important personal stuff. I love the cause, the impact we have and being able to (I hope) be a decent Manager too.

ShinyButtons · 01/10/2019 23:36

My job is mind numbing I enter supplier invoices onto our system and chase customers to pay their accounts, I love it if something does quite balance because it gives me a tiny challenge to work out why.

The good side is I have a brilliant boss and I love my work colleagues so even though my job is ridiculously boring I like going to work. I'm also quite well paid for what I do and can't find a more interesting job that can match my current pay. All the jobs that I'd find interesting and rewarding are unfortunately low paid jobs.

sadlittleblondie · 01/10/2019 23:54

Hahaha... I opened this thread expecting to find someone feeling like I do, and and... I also work in corporate governance and have many, many days where I feel like you do.

Feel free to inbox me if you like, but I've found a few strategies that help. Working for an exciting "buzzy" company that I really believe in has been a great help for me, but I completely know what you mean about the niche-ness of the role and the pay being great but a trap in and of itself. There's very few jobs we can just walk into, and probably not on even a third of the pay.

I try to make myself little challenges, I I constantly reading up on what other companies are doing because I'm nosy, but it helps me to find out some themes of best practice that I can try to integrate into our company. I try to break work down into small chunks. I focus on the areas of work I really enjoy and try to make sure I get exposure to more of those bits (for me, I love share schemes so I try to muscle in on that as much as possible). I also have a great boss who forces me to take new areas of responsibility on, so that's exciting too. And I remind myself often that many of my friends also hate their jobs, and aren't as lucky to command the kind of salaries and benefits that our industry does.

sadlittleblondie · 01/10/2019 23:55

So many typos, sorry!

inchoccyheaven · 02/10/2019 00:11

I generally like my job in a small post office and gift shop but hate the owners lack of managerial skills and constant negativity. My worry about going somewhere else is that there will always be someone you don't get on with.

koutouloufariqueen · 02/10/2019 00:15

Love my job - senior secretary to a breast surgeon - massively understaffed and the pressure we're under is immense but love talking to patients, giving results and hearing their relief, and sometimes tears on the phone gives me huge satisfaction Smile

bobbikato · 02/10/2019 01:05

I did love my job, most of the time but have recently fecked things up as made it known that i was sick of other staff always havin fag breaks .
i do not smoke .
it was low pay, long hours kitchen work but that's the good bits .
Boring at xmas havin to prep tons of veg - but if i could re-locate into a corner with my radio - then it was okay.
Would love to work with people who are not total psychos and bitch about everything .

BanKittenHeels · 02/10/2019 01:07

ST6 doctor.
I absolutely love the hands on stuff and I strangely enjoy the never ending study side of it. I wish I had gone down a different route to get where I’m going, perhaps SAS rather than ST just because it feels a bit more stable (for my specialism) but I feel well rounded and I know I’m good at my job.

I struggle with the hours, the blame culture and of course the shocking lack of funding for staff and essential equipment. The constant turn over of staff can be difficult too, it’s something I’ve never quite become used to.

Until last year I was ready to walk away because I had a stressful two years but I’ve been back a few months after my most recent mat leave and I feel much more in my groove.

OP I really recommend taking to a careers service. When I was struggling in my career, I looked to change and spoke to the careers service at my former university who talked me through my transferable skills and gave me many options.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 02/10/2019 01:13

I LOVE my job!
I have been a sahm for years, and have had a bit of a "journey" getting back into work, and what with one thing and another this is the third job I actually got but the first one that I have been able to get into and actually feel like I can stay and work and want to be here for as long as I can.
I am a support worker for adults with learning disabilities and it is so rewarding.
Every day is different, and I have never been so happy in my work.

chesterfuckingdraws · 02/10/2019 01:25

I work for the police (not a police officer) and I love it. It can be incredibly difficult; I get assaulted more that I should, I get threatened with all sorts and there's very little support from superiors. I fucking hate the decisions made by senior management, I hate my "know it all" colleagues with fuck all experience and I hate the pay but overall I love it, I couldn't imagine facing all the bad things if deep down I didn't love it.

No two days are the same, today I laughed until I cried, dealt with a medical emergency, then I was told I was going to killed; it's interesting stuff. I still have the best fun, even after 17years.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/10/2019 01:26

Peadiatric nurse. Been doing it for 16 years and love it!

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 02/10/2019 07:38

Chartered accountant specialising in tax. I like my job but atm wish I was at home with my kids which clouds my judgement.

It's very well paid, the hours are reasonable and if you go in house rather than an accounting firm you can usually do some wfh/flexible hours. Part time is possible too.

There are projects/times of year when it's busy and occasionally I will be working on some thing involving scarily large amounts of money and fear of getting it wrong takes some getting used to.

Lauren83 · 02/10/2019 07:45

I love mine! I work in private healthcare (assisted conception) and it's very rewarding, I work with some amazing people too. Was a huge change to my previous job as I was an area manager for a couple of designer clothing brands

Spidey66 · 02/10/2019 07:47

I'm a mental health nurse. It's ok, I'm burnt out though and am just cruising towards retirement.

dayslikethese1 · 02/10/2019 09:18

I hate going to work too OP but I'm beginning to think I just am bad at work or something because I seem to feel like this in every job and I look at job boards all the time and nothing appeals there either. I feel guilty because I don't think I'm very gd at my job and I don't really appreciate the fd things. I just try to remind myself how bad being unemployed would be and how much I love my house that this job allows me to pay for.

dayslikethese1 · 02/10/2019 09:19

*gd things

namechangedforthis1980 · 02/10/2019 10:44

I love it. I work for a charity, it's very rewarding, family friendly and no two days are the same
