To think i should not have to pay this

princessTiasmum · 30/09/2019 18:04

My dog died on the 13th of August, she was seen on the 12th, when i was advised to put het to sleep as her organs were shutting down
Her insurance was renwd at the end of July, she was being treated for Dementia
I got a letter ftrom the vet last week asking me for the excess for the insurance, which as far as i know is to pay for future treatment
As she died on the 13th and had one last prescription for her meds sh had been taking, to see if it would give her a bit longer,i costing £16-49
I thought anyway the excess was to the insurance ,but the vet said they didn't pay them the £99.which is what is confusing me,why do i have to pay it to the vet,and especially now my dog is no longer here to have more treatment,
So basically i would be paying £99 for the £16-49 tablets
I paid the first excess when she became ill, and i do understand that a renewal meand another excess, but she obviously wont need any more treatment, so why do i owe it to the vet anyway
Please no nasty comments i am still grieving for my dog, and devastated to have lost her
Thanks in advance

I'm sorry for your loss, OP. Flowers

Could you ask the vet for a breakdown of what you owe? Could it be that the insurers thought the July meds fell into the period covered by the excess, so you are paying for both the July and August meds, up to£99?

SkeletonSkins · 30/09/2019 18:11

I’m so sorry for your loss. Having a dog put to sleep would cost more than £99, so perhaps that is what the cost is for?

PrayingandHoping · 30/09/2019 18:13

Your vets will have submitted all your invoices to the insurance company and the insurers have paid the balance minus the excess, which you pay directly to the vet

The vets won't mind at all for you to have a copy of the statement of treatment had.

VeganCow · 30/09/2019 18:16

Sorry about your dog. It’s all very sad having to deal with these matters after.
Have you already paid the excess relating to any recent treatment? If you have then you shouldn’t have to pay again. If you haven’t paid any then yes, it goes straight to the vet and the insurance will only pay anything over the £99 for any claim.

gobbynorthernbird · 30/09/2019 18:23

The excess isn't to pay for future treatment. It's the portion of each new claim (in this case treatment/vet visit) which you have to pay.

Chloemol · 30/09/2019 18:53

I am sorry about your loss. I would suggest the £99 is the excess fee for the insurance, so say the bill was £250 the insurance would have paid £51 and you need to pay the rest. Don’t forget you would have had to pay for her to be put to sleep, did you have her cremated as that would cost, it’s not just the tablets. Most insurances will pay for the dog being put to sleep

ItsGoingTibiaK · 30/09/2019 18:59

I think you might be confusing ‘excess’ with ‘premium’? The premium is what you pay each month for the cover. The excess is the amount of any claim you have to pay. It sounds like the excess on your policy is £99, and the insurance company are paying the rest of the bill, which will cover the tablets, your dog being put to sleep etc.

onanothertrain · 30/09/2019 19:21

You pay excess on each claim. It is for treatment already had, not future treatment. Sorry about your dog.

princessTiasmum · 30/09/2019 19:29

I paid the excess when she started treatment, all treatment was covered for that year, it was the only treatment she had in the first year,i was asked to pay the excess when her treatment started, and i paid £99, the vets letter said it was the excess because it was starting a new year, but what i can't understand is why to the vet, not the insurance
I have rung the insurance company anyway and waiting for them to get back to me
The £99 is paid when you put a claim in,so say i was claiming for one of my cats also insured,if they needed treatment i would pay £99 up front

Chloemol the bill was only £16-49. which the insurance paid
Which means i am paying £99 to cover £16-49

princessTiasmum · 30/09/2019 19:39

I paid for cremation £165 , yes they paid for putting to sleep so maybe the £99 is for that, but still cost me more than if i had not had the insurance, anyway thank for replies, i will ring the vets tomorrow and discuss it again

The insurance company will always get the owner to pay the excess to the vets, not to them. That is standard

Sorry about your dog 😕

Moooooooooooooooooo · 30/09/2019 20:35

We always pay the full vet’s bill. The insurance then reimburses us, minus the excess. Simples.

Cherrysoup · 30/09/2019 20:50

You pay the vet, because they deal direct with the insurance company so that you don’t have to. Most vets deal direct, they send the insurance company the bill, but you need to pay the excess of the bill from her last treatment.

I’m sorry for your loss, it’s a tough and horrible time.

Thanks everyone, i am still in shock by the suddenness of her death ,she went blind suddenly and was running and bumping into things
I found her crying in the middle of the night head pressing and tring to get behind a radiator,
I should have left her when i first took her on the 12th, but i only went for more meds
I feel guilty that i took her home for the last night,
I rehomed her 4 years ago from a couple who told me she was 3,
I was later told by the vet she was more like 9 or 10, but she seemed quite active when i got her, and loved to play with her ball,
I have realised now the the £99 would be because it was a renewal.and the cost for putting her to sleep was £115,so basically the £16-49 was what i had to pay after the excess
My mind hasn't been functioning properly i think, still so upset ,burst into tears when i am asked about her
Will add a photo if i can, this is where she got into my bed on her own, she was a little sweetheart, yorkshire terrier cross i believe

To think i should not have to pay this

What a dear little soul. So sorry for your loss. Flowers
I hope you've worked it out now, but if not the vet can give you a breakdown in writing. Say the bill was £100 and you have a £90 excess. The insurance pay £10 to the vet, you pay £90 to the vet. The excess is what you have to fork out. I know, have just done it myself.

princessTiasmum · 01/10/2019 12:33

regmover thank you,yes she was so lovely called Lola,,and with my 3 cats, she basically ignored them, even when one of them used to swipe her when she passed him
I am going to call at the vets later and sort it out
For some reason i hadn't counted in the Euthanasia, Thanks again for all you kind words and input

I'm so sorry for your loss. That little princess is beautiful and she'll be at peace now.

It'll be the excess on your insurance.
They charge excess per claim so even if they're already covering a condition, you have to pay the excess again on an unrelated condition.

pepsirolla · 01/10/2019 12:51

Also please check your policy in full as some pay out a lump sum on death of pet.
So sorry for your lossFlowers

princessTiasmum · 02/10/2019 23:34

It wasn't an unrelated condition, it was the same, also wont pay out on death unless the pet is a pedigree and you have a receipt for price paid for it
I know this because i have lost 2 pedigree cats in the past but because i didn't have the receipt or proof of what i paid for them they wouldn't pay out
Having had them until a fairly old age i had lost the receipts so no proof of cost
