To ask you to help me lose weight

iwashappyonce · 30/09/2019 17:56

I have to. I'm huge. I need to drop at least three dress sizes and even then I'd probably still be classed as obese.

I've downloaded the NHS weight loss app. I've ordered some scales, they come tomorrow.

That's as far as I've got. I suck at this.

You can do this! Is there some small changes you can start with? Fizzy drinks switched to something, sugary biscuits to switch to something else? It’s great if you feel able to make lots of changes all at once but starting with small changes can really help. You can do this!

iwashappyonce · 30/09/2019 18:01

I drink a lot of soda, because when I was pregnant I had HG and it was the only thing I could ingest at certain times. I easily drink two cans of full fat coke a day, sometimes more. So I am definitely quitting that.

DontFundHate · 30/09/2019 18:02

You can do it! Well done for taking the first steps. I'm sure your GP would help?

Why not post up your daily food here and we can help you to make some healthy swaps?

Or if you can afford it, I product tested an online nutritionist for Mumsnet and she was absolutely fantastic. I think it would have been about £40 per half hour phone call, she was a nutritionist on isoshealth I would definitely recommend it for common sense, changing habits rather than a fad diet etc

EssentialHummus · 30/09/2019 18:02

Lots of people will come on and tell you what works for them (as I’m about to Grin), and you really need to think about what sort of person you are and why the weight has climbed up. Do you comfort eat? Stress eat? Order takeaways when there’s no food in? Eat large portions regularly? Etc.

I do 5:2/intermittent fasting. It works for me because it matches my “problem” (willpower) and the thread on here is lovely and supportive.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 30/09/2019 18:03

Look at how you eat and why you eat that way. Think about the practicalities - do you need to eat on the go? Do you need to feed others when cooking meals?

ifoundthebread · 30/09/2019 18:08

I agree with small changes, I've recently lost 2 stone (and still classed as obese 😒) and started with a fit bit and keeping a food diary, making myself aware of my in vs very little out. I then made an effort to up my daily steps, nothing major but at least 2000 more than I was averaging before (took me to a daily target of 8000, isn't alot for some but for me it was) once I got that buzz of an all green screen on my fitbit I made sure to get that for a week. I then started looking at my diet, again make small changes. Change from blue labelled milk to green, buy bars of chocolate rather than share bags, cut from 2 sweeteners in a cuppa to 1. Small changes can make a huge difference, you've got this!

Shitonthebloodything · 30/09/2019 18:12

Join slimming world. I've lost 2 dress sizes since Jan on it and the weight it coming down slowly but surely and not going back on if I have a bit of a cheat every now and then. I've joined previously and thought it was shit but I'm in a good group now and they've changed things so it's more focussed on real food instead of Muller lights and mug shots

Gingernaut · 30/09/2019 18:14

Some of the flavoured waters are nice.

Try some of those instead of the full fat cola.

furrybadger · 30/09/2019 18:15

I’ve just started my weight loss 3 weeks ago and I’m 10lb down, just cut out fizzy drinks, downloaded my fitness pal and count all my calories and joined a gym, I try and do at least 45 mins cardio a day 5x a week even if it’s just a quick walk on the treadmill, get a Fitbit and try and do at least 5k steps a day, you can do this 👏🏽

reenon · 30/09/2019 18:16

Check out team rh on Facebook.

Lockheart · 30/09/2019 18:17

Hi OP, AIBU may not be the best place for this as posters here are not known to be the most sensitive. There are dedicated weightless forums within MN with group weightloss threads which might be more supportive. Good luck!

iwashappyonce · 30/09/2019 18:18

Have considered a Fitbit. Would it help?

OP posts:
Shayisgreat · 30/09/2019 18:20

To lose my baby weight I stopped all treats during the week (it helped that my son was allergic to eggs and I was breastfeeding so had to give up too so couldn't have most cakes and pastries anyway) and had chocolate at the weekend only. And I didn't allow sweets in the house and had to walk to the shop at the weekend to get it. I have NO willpower when there is stuff in the house.

Just say no to take aways. Cook your own dinner and bring a packed lunch if you're working.

Eat enough protein and fat with eat meal and balance them with the carbs. Don't go mad restricting calories as you'll give up the diet very quickly. The aim is to make permanent change rather than start something unsustainable.

Don't eat again after dinner until breakfast. If you get hungry drink some water and do your nails, read a book or have a bath.

Have 1 or 2 units of alcohol only a week. Or if you do want more have vodka and soda or other clear spirits without a sugary mixer. Beer, cider and wine are full of unnecessary calories so 1 or 2 a week is grand but any more is not a good habit.

Do 20-30 min HIIT workouts or strength training 4 times a week.

Oh and drink enough water and get enough sleep. Since my baby has been sleeping through the night my weight has gone down much quicker.

bridgetreilly · 30/09/2019 18:20

Cut out carbs. No potatoes, bread, rice, pasta etc as well as sweet stuff. Don't worry about low-fat. Focus on getting enough protein and veg, and some fat, so that you aren't hungry. Carbs will make you crave more carbs. Without them, you'll find you (mostly) won't want to eat them again.

AskMeHow · 30/09/2019 18:21

You can do a lot with small changes. Switch your soda to diet, a ten minute walk every day, stop buying crisps (or whatever your current snack of choice is).

A Fitbit is a great idea. You've got this!

iwashappyonce · 30/09/2019 18:22

Ok. I'm getting a Fitbit. I've got a bit of spare cash this month so will use it for that.

LizzieSiddal · 30/09/2019 18:22

Start by cutting back gradually on the coke. Take a few weeks to do it and you’ll be successful. Dh has done the 5:2 diet and he’s found it very good. It’s recommended by Drs too.

Shayisgreat · 30/09/2019 18:22

You could just download an app to your phone that tracks your steps. It's not as accurate as a fit bit but it could work.

ASundayWellSpent · 30/09/2019 18:24

Download the MAS2FIT app, think they have it on Android as well as Apple... Its changed my life honestly I'm about 15kilos down! Home workout exercises for 15 mins 5 times a week, daily meal plan for four weeks including the shopping list so you only buy whats in the plan and no extra snacks or waste. I eat easily as much as I used to, there are 3 meals, 2 snacks and a dessert each day. The difference is its good, low calorie, high volume foods and I'm in calorie deficit every day.

Chickenwing · 30/09/2019 18:56

Coke zero is just as good as coke. Theres literally no reason to ever drink full fat fizzy juice when the zero versions are just as good.

Then swap to skimmed milk, swap oil for low cal spray, swap chocolate bars for fibre one bars/cereal bars... if you want a snack eat cold meat or fruit if you want something sweet. Have salads rather than carby meals, you can eat so much salad and its still hardly any calories. And finally try to move a bit more just an extra 1000 steps a day would make a big difference. Good luck!!

chillychicken · 30/09/2019 19:03

James Smith Academy. You don’t even have to pay, just use the free resources.

Look at the calorie calculator, download MyFitnessPal and log everything. Weigh everything.
Walk as many steps a day as you can. Don’t eat back exercise calories.

Little steps. Don’t think “I need to lose X number of stone”, just take each day as it comes. Weight will fluctuate, but slow and steady wins the race.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 30/09/2019 19:03

A fit bit is great. Getting those 10,000 steps is quite addictive. If you have an iPhone then the fitness app on that also tracks steps and calories and gives you a monthly challenge.

Also try my fitness pal app for food tracking. It can be quite eye opening. I am still obese at 16 stone but I run 5k three times a week, walk 5k three times a week and at least a 10k at the weekend. I aim for health as the scales are still depressing but I am running a half marathon in two weeks time.

I weighed 27 stone before gastric surgery and my PCOS is a lifelong issue.

Really I am saying go for health. Do what you can and what makes you feel good. Get some good headphones and get walking then running if you can. It actually makes you feel better than food although it takes more time!

iwashappyonce · 30/09/2019 19:06

I have IBD so me and artificial sweeteners don't get along. I would be better off drinking water or decaf tea I think.

OP posts:
EssentialHummus · 30/09/2019 19:10

Maybe sparkling water op, with lemon/lime and ice?

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 30/09/2019 19:10

I have Crohn's disease so I do get that! It's difficult eating bland food and still losing weight.
