Apple Watch, worth it?

Does anyone have an Apple Watch? Are they worth the money? How does it work with regards to calls, messages etc? Do you have to take out an internet plan or do they run off WiFi? My partner suggested getting me one for my birthday but I don’t know much about them! Thanks!

My son bought one and then sold it because he thought it was not worth the bother. And he loves gadgets.

I have one, it’s over 2 years old though and they’ve moved on. Mine is connected to my phone, if my phone is not in the vicinity it doesn’t do much. Newer ones have their own internet connection so you could go off running without your phone but still be able to make calls etc.

I found it really useful for distance running. I now find true contactless payment feature on it really useful so I don’t have to rummage in my bag for my wallet while holding my baby. It’s a fun gadget. Not sure I’ll replace it when it breaks - unless I take up log distance running again.

I have one and I don't know where I'd be without it. It has really motivated me to keep active and I use it every day for tracking my activity. I wouldn't bother if you're not into working out - I do lots of different activities so it works for me.

Also, sorry for not being very helpful, but mine is an old one and connects to my phone. I wouldn't get excited about using it for calling as it's rubbish for that!

I won one through work in 2016, I'd never have spent £300+ on one before having it. But I'd not be without it now, I find it really useful, I use it for fitness more than anything else and of course it's great at work as I can see if someone is trying to get hold of me, without having to have my phone on display. I love the vibrate setting as it means a quick look in a meeting means I can choose to pick up the phone or not.

My dh has the latest version, so it works for phone calls, texts, email etc without it having to Bluetooth to his phone.

noblegiraffe · 30/09/2019 17:06

You need an iPhone, it connects to it via Bluetooth and takes its internet from that. You can get one that doesn’t need the phone nearby but I always have my phone on me so it’s not worth it.

I love mine, I think if you want to get the most out of it you need to engage with the fitness stuff.

Text messages pop up, you can reply by speaking into it. The speech recognition is good. You can make calls on it but you have to hold your wrist to your mouth so short calls only.

I have a hybrid watch as I found that those who had Apple watches were constantly looking at them. Very off putting if you're talking to someone or just with someone generally and they're forever gawping at their phone or fiddling with it.

Mike looks like a classic dress watch but syncs with my phone and tracks activity and sleep but can also control my music and take pictures on my phone if I don't have it with me.

TheWorldAsh · 30/09/2019 17:22

Yes. I'm upgrading my two year old Series 3 to a Series 5.

My DW also loves hers. She's had a Series 2 and then a Series 4.

Not for everyone though so make a list of why you'd want one. Balance that against the negatives and the competition.

Afolnerd · 30/09/2019 17:34

My teenage son was desperate for one for his birthday.
He had it 6 months and the glass exploded while it was charging! I had a huge battle with Apple to get them to refund even though it was a known fault with the series 3.
He decided he didn’t want another one as the novelty value of being able to craftily use it in lessons had worn off.
Not worth the huge price tag in my opinion and I am a avid iPhone/iPad fan.

TheWorldAsh · 30/09/2019 17:44

PS. I pay for my beer at the pub with my  Watch. Worth the price of entry alone. Hasn't exploded yet either. 😂

Sherloidbaisherloid · 30/09/2019 19:23

Thank you so much everyone! I am really into my fitness so I think it sounds good purely from that point of view, and the calls and messages etc would be a bonus. Would be handy at work too as I can’t have my phone with me so will be good to see if anyone has tried to contact me. Lots of fab advice here

I broke mine last week and have missed it so much! I didn't wear a watch before I had it but now I'm REALLY missing it. I think they're fab.

Aragog · 30/09/2019 20:09

I have one. I had an original one until February this year, when dh got me the new one. It is the only watch I have ever actually worn. I wear it every day I am out of the house.

What do I use it for?

Accessing messages and some emails in work hours (my phone is in a locked cupboard in my classroom - as it has a camera on it ) nut cans till get important messages - and respond if I need to.
Heart rate - I have SVT(well I actually had surgery this week to solve it but ...) and whilst waiting for recent tests it has been excellent for monitoring what's going on. Likewise with the ecg app. Been useful this last 2 days to see what's going on since treatment,
Sat nav - when walking in unfamiliar routes
Telling the time - obviously!
My calendar is in it - I move to different lessons throughout the day which change each week - and my watch always tells me where I am next and what is coming up. Plus reminders for important meetings, etc.
Telephone - when I don't have my phone handy I can see who has called me. If I'm not teaching I can actually answer it and speak to people
Payment - has Apple Pay on
When travelling - boarding pass, some qr codes for some hotels, etc. All on my wrist
Weather/news
Music - controlling tracks etc esp when excising
Health app - when exercising
