Spoke to DM (late 40s) on the phone this morning and her doctor has refered her for an urgent mammogram. Nurse could feel multiple lumps in a lumpy area. DM has been experiencing some pain and her breast has swollen and changed shape. I'm so cross she didn't mention it sooner.

AIBU to be worried here? Obviously cancer is my main worry but the nurse said cancer is usually painless in the breast and that's why is can go undetected?

Please share your stories of false alarms!

Most referrals are not cancer but they are all checked out quickly.
Try to wait and see if there is 'something' to worry about. And please don't be cross with your DM for not mentioning it before. Don't say anything to her about that that might make her feel bad.
Just be nice, be calm and find ways of being kind to her.

I found a lump a few years ago and any ‘suspect lumps’ are all fast tracked and you are aimed to be seen within 2 weeks (I assume it’s still 2 weeks). Mine was just a ‘fatty lump’. So they will always follow this course of action. Do hope your mum is ok.

So sorry you are going through this OP. Fingers crossed for you and your DM that is is nothing. Focus on the fact it is being investigated quickly so that any necessary treatment can start ASAP. My dad has male breast cancer & has received amazing care.

Thinking of you Flowers

Thanks all. Of course I'm not really cross with her or said anything to her. I just wish she didn't leave it for months. Sorry to hear about your DF @coffeeandpyjamas Flowers

I don't have any stories of false alarms, but I am in my early 40s and have been having the same symptoms for a while now and ignoring as have had so much else going on. Your post has prompted me to book appointment to get it checked out. Hope all is well with your DM Flowers.

I've been treated for breast cancer diagnosed last year at 42. I had no pain and from I gather that is quite usual. So I've my fingers crossed your mum will be ok since she is experiencing some pain.
My experience was very positive as we found it so early and it was very treatable, please keep that in mind. Thanks

Yanbu to be worried. I hope your DM is ok. Perhaps a different topic would be better for your question?

LunasOrchid · 30/09/2019 22:28

@Slave2theGrind I'm glad you're going to get it checked out! At least some good has come out of this tough time!
I'm glad you're on the mend @ranoutofquinoaandprosecco. I can't imagine how difficult it was for you.

I had a lumpy bit checked as my Mum died from breast cancer so I am a bit jumpy about anything amiss. Was harmless but a stressful time.

Ferfecksackmammy · 30/09/2019 22:36

A couple of years ago I found a lump and my doctor was certain that it was nothing to worry about but sent me for urgent review just to be sure. It turned out to be nothing to worry about. Always best to be safe not sorry. Fingers crossed everything will be fine for your mum

PurpleDaisies · 30/09/2019 22:36

As others have said, it’s absolutely standard for breast lumps to be referred as 2 week urgent appointments. It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s serious. I’ve been to breast clinic under the same protocol and it was just a cyst.

Fingers crossed for her.

Elphame · 30/09/2019 22:38

Please don't panic - the urgent referral is quite usual for lumps. Even if the GP is pretty sure they are just cysts they should still refer on for checks so she's doing the right thing.

I had my first referrals in my late 20s and now have a direct link to my local breast unit as I was having an urgent referral at least once a year.

Cysts can be incredibly painful when they press on nerve rich areas of the breast. They tend to get worse too around menopause as the hormone levels fluctuate and I went down a cup size when they took 4 vials of fluid out of one!

Rachelle11 · 30/09/2019 22:40

If it's painful sounds more likely to be cystic.

ChicCroissant · 30/09/2019 22:41

I had an early mammogram in my late forties as my area was doing a trial and it found a lump I didn't even know I had. I was referred on and they decided it was a pre-menopausal lump of some kind (possibly a cyst?), it had disappeared by the time of the next mammogram 3 years later.

I hope it's good news for your mother, OP.

Warmhandscoldheart · 30/09/2019 22:48

I had an urgent referral after finding two lumps, mammogram and ultrasound diagnosed fat necrosis, which is an internal bruise.
Good luck
