changing children’s surname on passport

chris89 · 30/09/2019 13:46

I had my children’s surname changed by deed poll 2 years ago . ( long story short: not in contact with father financially/ physically etc etc ) I was able to change their surname with a letter explaining how he isn’t around and all of that . I didn’t change their surname on their passport tho as I was told I needed a court order . Has anyone been able to change their children’s surname on their passport without a court order or letter from father????

No, you'll need a court order or to wait until they are old enough to change their names themselves.

That's assuming their father has PR for them.

If you have a deed poll document you can do it with that. I did!

Just be aware it might take a bit longer than a standard child passport application

And u didn’t need to go to court or anything ?

If father has PR you need a letter from him that states he agreed to the name change

No, if you got a deed poll after 2 years of no contact with the father you can use that to change your child's name on the passport. I think it'll be renewing the passport so will end up costing you the full amount again.

The passport office won’t accept a deed poll for a child under 16 if it wasn’t done with the permission of all who have PR.

You can go to court and get an order to get permission to do it.

Things are much tighter on name changes now than they used to be.
